Default Redline 5W-50 thoughts

Anyone tried Redlines new 5w50 oil? I states on the bottle that it has ZDDP additive along with other wear modifers. Any thoughts and opinions on it?

I don't like the 5-50 spread. The problem with the wide viscosity is the additives used to create it also create the problems. For the bay area stick with 10-40 in the winter and 20-50 in the summer.

Redline is great oil and meets all of the old oil standards (ie SL-SG).

I like the idea of the high viscosity spread but wonder what the side effects might be. This concern isn't based on anything I know. I couldn't find a synthetic oil with high wear additives and the right viscosity so I blended Mobil 0W40 and 15W50. The Mobil techs said it would be fine.

I've done the same thing only using 0w40 and Mobil's V-Twin 20w50.

As for the the 5w50, we had a MB McLaren at our Cars n Coffee yesterday, it plainly said on the oil filler cap they wanted M1 5w50 used in the car, it was in the decal and labeled on the oil cap too.

Thats probably a better combo. I'm sure the zn and p levels are much higher in the 20W50 motorcycle oil. I had already filled with 15W50 before I got the idea to blend it.

I spoke with Redline tech guy and he said unlike some others they have not cut back on ZDDP because they don't believe it damages emissions systems. He even said it was unnecssary to add their ZDDP additive so I's clear he wasn't just trying to sell their products. As to the viscosity spread I used to be a big believer in wide spreads, especially having 50 at the high end. After considerable reading I'm now a convert to 10W-40, at least with synthetics and where the climate is more moderate like around here. I'd go into details but it would just start another oil war. It's worth reading up on as there is lots of good info out there.

Thanks guys for the input. I couldn't find the 5w-50 at any stores locally, East Bay, over the this past weekend so I went with Redline 5w-40 instead. I am traveling to SoCal this week and I really needed to change the oil today before I left. So I will maybe try the 5w-50 this summer.
