OT: Schumacher to sign with Mercedes
December 12, 2009, 11:29 AM EST
BERLIN (AP) - German daily Bild claims seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher will come out of retirement to drive for Mercedes next year.
A report in Saturday's edition of the newspaper says the two parties have agreed to a one-year contract and will announce the deal next week.
Mercedes said that "there is always speculation as long as one seat in our team is not taken."
Schumacher's spokeswoman, Sabine Kehm, declined to comment on the report.
The 41-year-old Schumacher retired in 2006 after winning a record number of F1 titles. He abandoned plans for a temporary comeback with Ferrari this year due to a neck injury in a motorcycle crash.

Supposedly 7m euros offered by Mercedes. I hope it happens. Nothing will make me happier than seeing him dust King "I am as good as Senna was" Lewis. Button made a HUGE mistake moving to McHamilton, he will not get equal equipment, despite all the lies about it emanating from Whitmarsh' mouth. Nico can learn a LOT from Michael. I wasn't Michael's biggest fan (punting Hill in 94, Villeneuve in 97, parking the car at Monaco during qualifying in 06) but I hope this happens. It would be a good bookend to his career starting with Sauber-Mercedes in the C11 prototype. Also I am REALLY happy Sauber is back as Sauber, I hope they do really well with the Ferrari engine and I am pleased as punch Frank Williams' strategy to vote to disallow Sauber as the 14th team (before Toyota pulled out) did not work. It was nothing more than him trying to steal Petronas.
