Default Battery Install WITHOUT data loss!

Just installed a Optima Redtop Model 35 without the data loss. I just simply left the battery tender connected to the cig lighter. Make sure you DO NOT touch the positive cable to any metal parts.

As for the Optima Model 35, it fits well BUT the battery clamp is too small to hold the lip. Easy fix, I put a 2" piece of 1/2" x 1/2" aluminum angle iron on the lip of the battery where the clamp is to rest. This gives the battery more meat for the clamp to hit.

Could you add a photo of the angle iron? I'm not sure what you mean and I'm going to want to go to the Optima Redtop this spring. Thanks!

I recently did the same thing, left the battery maintainer plugged in and replaced with an Optima 35.

However, I did not have any issue with securing the battery with the original parts. I did the same with several 993s and never had any issues. Wonder why you had an issue?

The only data loss would be clock and code for tuner, correct?

For some reason when you loose data on our cars it takes a while for it to run properly. Im sure someone can expand on this....

As for securing the battery, I cant figure out why the clamp was not big enough to hold the battery. I bought the
OPTIMA 35 SC35A Red Top Battery. 720CCA #8020-164. I did a lot of searching on the forums and everyone said it would fit. The clamp was just short of securing the lip. I'll take some pictures tonight.

the other way to maintain radio and ECU memory is to hook up a 9V battery to a cig lighter plug and plug into the lighter while changing the battery. Someone sells these for an outrageous amount of money or you can just wire a couple of Radio Shack pieces together

On 96 and later US cars the readiness codes will be reset as well.

I'm wondering if 9V would be sufficient for the ECU to retain readiness codes. NE1 confirm? Yea or Nay?

I used the trickle charge on both OBD1 and OBD2, the clock and radio codes were not affected while changing batteries.

My neighbor uses the trickle charger as well on his 03 Speed Yellow 996 and he said it works great.

I'm thinking of getting one of these if the 9v will keep the memory on my 993. The eBay auction says it will.

Would this 9volt set up work for a steering wheel swap?

...cannibalize that old cell phone charger that doesn't work with your new phone....check continuity to make sure you have the + and - wired correctly to the lighter jack...
