Default Good Memory Anyone; 964 or 993 Article about driving in Alaska

Hey there...any one with a good memory?

I remember reading an article about either 964s or 993s being cold weather tested in Alaska. It had to be towards the end of the development just prior to product release of either of the models...mebbe 1988 for the 964 or 1993 for the 993.

They had to leave the engines running at night as they would be REAL tough to start in the morning. It was something like -40 deg F and they drove around for a week or something.

One time one of the cars stalled while idling all night so they had to take it to a heated shop and warm it up to get it started. They also learned to drive at 60 MPH on ice roads.

Don't remember if it was R&T, Autoweek or C&D.

Mebbe somebody has a good memory and a collection of magazines.

It was, at least in my memory, quite a good article.

Cheers!

I know the article of which you speak. It was Car and Driver and I believe it was an issue during 1990. Sorry I don't know the exact issue but I can see the article in my mind.

I drive my '95 all winter long in Anchorage, been doing it for 13 years. Coldest we get is about 20 below, but it can dip to 30 below on occasion. Heated garage at night; during the day I will start it several times to keep it from getting cold soaked.

She fusses at 10 below or colder...from zero and up is okay, anything above 20 she is happy.

Thanks Erik,

Looks like June of 1990 so they must have been testing 964s.

I don't think I will be driving the 993 in those conditions but it was very interesting...at least as I recall...

Cheers!
