Default Devil's Highway; Escape from Black Friday

Drove East out of Phoenix today at 5:30 am. 2 hours later, just after sunrise, breakfast in Globe then East another 90 miles to Morenci. North from the mine on the old "Devil's Highway", used to be 666, now 191. Roughly 87 miles north to Alpine, switchbacks, hairpins, sweepers, a mile of dead straight plateau, about 7000 feet and 300 and some turns later, Hannigan Meadow.

I've had the car just over a month now. 600 miles on this trip today and some of my thoughts include:

Cruised through Phoenix Metro area at 5:30. Turned the heat adj **** slightly right of 12:00 and immediately, the chill was gone...cozy, comfortable and a great start to the day.

During the Devil's Highway run....the incredible sound of the Fister Stage III's while accelerating and decelerating in and out of the twisties, up through 2nd and 3rd gears.....snarls, growls, pops...

I debated for quite some time whether or not buying a 12 year old Porsche was the right thing to do....I just got lucky. Finding Roche's car for sale on this forum, well...I could not be more pleased. This car is incredible!

On a side note...averaged 18-20 mpg on this run, as if I care.....and I was running pretty aggressively

Also, I must admit, somewhere between Globe and Safford, I glanced over to see 120...and it felt like 75.

If this ends up being the first and last Porsche I ever own, well...fine by me!

Denny

From those of us in the Pacific Northwest weathering four weeks of (nearly) uninterrupted rain, much jealousy is coming your way. Looks like a great road! Nice wheels :-)

I'm glad you made the run today and enjoyed yourself. Those of us in the high country are expecting a little snow tonight. You pictures just might have been a little whiter.......

JoAnne

Next run has to be back up to Prescott...would love to see that "RS" and how it's coming along. I can never get enough of Wickenburg to Prescott....just have to watch the weather so I can throw Jerome into the mix.

Any new pics of the "RS" ?

I have to think that the relative comfort factor to your K bike must have crossed your mind, when that heat kicked in.

You are such a good writer and photographer, that it almost felt like i was there too ! it may not be your last but it might well turn out to be your favorite, best car of all time - which it basically is -

right after the 968 Turbo S of course !

Denny-- Gorgeous C4S & photos.

(Glad to see good things can happen when you wake up before 10AM. Maybe I'll try that sometime)

I must admit the Bike is feeling a bit neglected lately. I've made this run twice on the bike....first time was the aboslute coldest I've ever been on a bike...even with heated grips, heated seat.

The bike is a great one....however, no comparison to the enjoyment experienced yesterday in the C4S. What I can't get over is how everything, I mean everything works as if I just bought the car. And I received it with 79,100 miles on it.

Everything I've read and expected is right there...the feel of the car, the sounds, the fit and finish. I cannot imagine buying one of these with very low mileage, covering it, and letting it sit and appreciate. I can't stay out of this car. I just finished giving it a bath after yesterday's 600 mile run, and even washing it is pure pleasure.

I know, I sound nuts, but I am certain most of you feel the same way about yours....

It's best seeing that deer through the camera lens than through the windshield. Nice pics of the arid landscape!

Believe me, my eyes were constantly moving ahead, along each side of the road...this time of year and with my experience with the bike....the thought of deer and elk was constantly on my mind!

I made that run in a former 993 when I lived there. The Alpine stretch back to the desert was amazing. I only encountered one other car when I drove that road.

Glad that you get to enjoy it!
