We have a 2005 Santa Fe with 60k Miles now and it is very reliable. We bought it for very cheap when it was 1 year old and it is amazing how much car you can get for the money. Fuel efficiency could be better but gas is still cheap in the US.

I seriously considered the '07 Santa Fe before buying my'07 X3. I don't know if the vehicles have changed much since. The great BMW lease rates helped with the decision as the it brought the lease payments closer. I didn't seriously consider the Honda. The Honda may be better on fuel.

i run a surf camp in mexico, have collegues in the turist business [where gas consumption is a major concern], who run everything including the CRV... the winner ? try the Ford Escape. it's a monster -- most under-rated car on the road. I have 2 with over 200k on them with the cats off. both pull incredibly strong. and the off-road abuse i have put these Escapes through, and they keep passing suspension inspections... the two examples you provided would have disintegrated by now. with the Escape you need to watch the cat. other than that, one of the most bulletproof cars on the road.
