Default Heat exchangers

Did anyone had to replace their heat exchanger (exhaust part)? very expensive parts it seems...I have not done it yet, but mine are rusted through, and I'm looking at a Eur 4000, bill.
Any suggestion?

I bought both recently for $100 from a 993 that someone was parting out here on Rennlist. One drawback to running without an engine tray on a car that's been lowered, is the heat exchangers droop and can break off if one backs out of a steep driveway. Ask me how I know...

Might check eBay to see if there are any...

Best of luck.

I'm going to try e-bay, but not very hopeful, 100$ seems really cheap, were they in a good condition?

These come up for sale used on a pretty regular basis. Usually in the $400-$600 range. They're a popular upgrade for 3.2 and 964 3.6 engines.

I'll start looking for 2nd hand ones. I also just received a mail from Fabspeed advising to replace the whole lot (exhaust) in one go. Is that an option worth considering? quoted $2,500 (I am not aware of a branch in Europe, but maybe there are alternatives).

Yeah the heat exchangers came off a 993 with 60K miles. They were used, obviously, but not in bad shape at all. Yeah, I got lucky to get these for $100.

That's crazy money. Just get a pair of used heater boxes and be done with it -- unless the rest of the system is rusted out. If that's the case, you can just find a used complete exhaust system from a track car or wreck. It won't be anywhere near $2,500.

Just got the complete exhaust system from Fabspeed for my 993 after a wreck that took out the original system. Still probably needs some adjustment but I have not been happy with the amount of heat that gets into the cabin from the exchangers on their headers. Don't know for sure what the original system included, but I've heard that it pulled heat off of the catalytic converter as well as the exhaust manifold. Great system for the track, but if you want to drive in cold weather (which I assume you'd need in the Netherlands), I'd ask a lot more questions before buying.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try first second hand ones. I am not so worried about the heating since I use the car mostly for tracking, but I'd hate to get exhaust gases getting inside...The reason I was asking was that the prices quoted were a little scary, I'd rather spend the money on other upgrades.

No, but there will probably need replacing. I already had to replace all bushings and rubber parts in the suspension and steering (1994 model). My mechanic is happy to replace the Heat exchangers by second hand ones and order all "small bits" needed. It might cost as much as the Heat exchangers themselves at the end...
