Default OT: Tire size help for my sister in law pls

I know this is off topic but its the only place I could think of to go to quickly for an answer (as someone here has the answer for everything!!).

My SIL has a 2008 Mitsubishi with stock all season tires of 215/45/18. A friend has winter tires (we are in Toronto and this car needs them) to give her that are 235/65/17. The diameters are 25.6 vs 29.0 inches respectively.

She is ready to purchase rims for the winters and her husband says no problems. Isnt she looking at big potential problems with ABS, speedo etc?? Not that i want to create family problems!! but i dont want her to waste her cash.

Many thanks

As long as the tires are the same all the way around you shouldnt have trouble with the ABS, but the speedo will be off by 13% (55mph on the speedo would actually be 62). The other thing I would be concerned about is clearance in the fenders, 4 inches is a pretty big jump.

+1 This, with the added height and width you could have fender problems, lock to lock problems. I would be looking for the correct sizing.

Thanks. It comes down to 1. free tires and purchase new 17" rims or 2. use the existing 18" rims, buy new properly sized tires and then swap the tires twice a year. Guess I will have to help her cost it out assuming the 3.4" diameter difference on the free tires even works from a clearnace perspective

thanks for the thoughts
