I find technical books to be heavy going, but "911 Story" was an invaluable help when I was shortening my 911 list.
Thanks again!

I read Frere's book when I bought my first 964 several years ago, but I'll be going over it again this winter. I also need to get Adrian Streather's 993 book and that should be enough

Derek,
My vote is keep your 964.....WOW! is all I can say. Then save your pennies and buy the 993 of your dreams.

Yeah, had a baby and needed a more family-oriented car. I ended up with a 993 C4S, picking it up this week. Life is tough...

I sold my 964 a few months ago. The few things I noticed was the 993 turns in quicker and has a more compliant ride. Both cars were lowered with Bilstein HDs. I've had a couple of different muffler combos on the 993, but actually prefer the sound of the solid lifter 964. The 964 had a cat bypass and primary bypass. The 964 also felt like it had a bit more low end torque.

Both cars a great but have there own problems like many have mentioned. Some day I may pick up another 964. With the right suspension setup and wheel/tire combo, I think the 964 is a great looking sort of, old-school ride.

Derek, I have had both and in my opinion there is not much between them as far as performance and overall enjoyment are concerned. The 993 feels marginally more civilized, which I don't consider a plus. I tracked both of them and a well set-up 964 is every bit as capable as the 993. Also, in my case it cost more than $20k to make that trade. Tough call, good luck with your decision.

I made the jump from a 964 to a 993. Biggest diff is the look.

Power is about the same, but the 964 seemed to have a bit more torque at the bottom RPM and 993 has more power in the top end. When you step on it, the 964 initially seemed to push harder but runs out of push at higher rpm whereas the 993 continues up to the redline once it gets started.

964 suspension is harsher than the 993. AC in 993 is better than the 964. Valve adjust is terrible on 964, not needed on the 993. Oil change on the 993 is terrible with the two oil filters compared to the 964. That is pretty much all the diff.

Now that I have the 993, I am thinking of going back to the 964. Saw a black 964 just like yours today with twist wheels. It does have the classic 911 look. I can't take my eyes off it, but I am sure others will say that about the 993.

Ordinarily, I would say to go for a 993 but your 964 is extraordinary so I would think twice. Beautiful car!

Its the first porsche I've ever owned however I've been a 911 freak since I was young. I bought the car when I was 35. I guess I had an early midlife crisis.

Anyways, I love the car to bits however am facinated by the wide body, rear soilerless (not sure if thats a word) 911. I'm craving a C2S or C4S 993 (or maybe a 1994 C4 widebody). Taking your collective porsche ownership into consideration, what would you say would be the major benefits of jumping to a 993 vs. my 964 (body style aside)?

I realize the 993 is newer and last of its kind but is it really worth it jump ship?
I know the widebody 993's will hold their value well but I'm looking for real world owner feedback.

Thank you in advance!

Derek
Hey, Derek:

I must say that your 964 is a fine specimen - beautiful car. Since you are posting on a 993 board, I'm sure you'll get a lot of bias towards a 993. But, if you are happy w/ your 964, then by all means keep it. I actually think that a nicely setup 964 is a tremendously good looking car, and it still has the classic lines of the 911. If you are looking for a 993, then have fun with your search.

Cheers,

Rich

Default Gearing?? 964 vs 993

Guys,

What is the difference in the gearing of the two cars? Does the 964 have lower gearing, making it feel torquier?

A 993 as a "family-oriented car" - I love that characterization!!!

In truth, it's amazingly practical. I run my kids all over the place in mine, and it's great for grocery shopping as well.

The RSA had scaffolding instead of rear seats, no heat, no A/C, and a very loud exhaust. Not exactly family oriented. The C4S I'm picking up on the other hand has an aftermarket cup holder! Quite a difference!!

I have to say I found many of the same things here. 964 and 993 very similar in performance and ride. Both have their ups and downs. 964 closk issues etc... 993 obdII issues. I think the 993 costs more to maintain from what I have heard. I went with the 964 for look and costs difference.

What were you planning to achieve by getting a 993 over a 964?
