I'd like to introduce myself...
Hello Ya'll! My name is Andre and live since 1999 in Alabama. Bevor I've lived in Germany so please forgive me should I express myself somewhat "funny" every now and then...
Besides my old trusty 924s I'm driving a 1996 993 Convertible with almost 50K miles on the clock - only on weekends if there is time - and the most famous CEL came on just a couple of weeks ago. Being familiar with Robin Sun's web site I found some helpful information about a scanning tool from OBD-2.com (Alex Peper). My previous attempt to read out the fault code wasn't succesful using the Equus OBD2 scanner available at Sears - the device couldn't establish a connection to the vehicle.
Has anyone made some experience using Alex scanning software? Any advice will be appreciated. Joel Reiser recommends the Durametric scanning tool but with a cost of almost $300 it appears to be too pricy...
Regards

300 too pricey???? Heck, that's less than the rear tires you're buying every year. I have an idea where you can sneak this in.
Andre's Birthday List
- Box of cigars, preferably Rocky Patel Maduros
- Dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse
- durametric scanning tool
- Rolex
- Pair of Allen Edmonds wing tips
- Filet-o-Fish from McDonalds

Hey, that's a fine birthday list! Rolex is not my style though - I prefer Tag Heuer! I guess I'm just too nifty; the last rear tires I had put on was a set of Michelin Pilot's 4 or 5 years ago with 40% still remaining...
$300 for a scanning tool is still expensive compared to Alex's software simply downloaded to a laptop (Robin calls it a portable flight data recorder!), which is only $122 plus $12 for a USB cable! I'm just looking for the biggest and best bang for the buck...
I'm located in Anniston - not too much around. It takes me at least an hour to get to B'ham.

If you do a search on the forum for OBD2 or OBDII you should find lots of info for you to digest.
Good luck and welcome to the forum. Your English is better than my German.

If the OBD2 scanner couldn't establish a connection it sounds like the Immobilizer was active. If you start and run the car you should have no trouble est. a connection.

Alex also suggested to check the fuse of the cigarette lighter, which, by the way, was OK! Thanks for the tip! I'll try again...

Thanks, Rick! Yes, black w/cashmere interior. I upgraded to aluminum shifter and parking brake handle - it's actually a 996 turbo shift **** special ordered for the 993. Glad to be on board, should have joined years ago when I purchased this car! Lot's of qualified commments, and the people seem to be very nice, too!
