All of this discussed in this thread a few years back including the rev drops "issue" w/ a r&p

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...nd-p-swap.html

that is an excellent thread, btw, imo.

It does because the gear ranges are narrower now. Thats my not well thought out theory anyway. Whether it would make a substantial difference or not would depend on the % change on the final drive ratio.

Best,

In all honesty, I haven't really tried to sell it yet. I'm secretly hoping an inexpensive 993 with a bad trans comes up for sale somewhere

However, I believe Viper Bob got approximately this much for a low mileage non-LSD gearbox from that car he was parting out a few months back.

Smile Me tranny may be for sale.

It has been completely gone through, steel synchros in 3rd, 4th and 5th, and other internal upgrades, 993 LSD re built by Guard....the tranny has 75,000 mile on it...but with the freshening I would think it to be good as new.

I am kicking around selling it and replacing it with a tranny with a Ring and Pinion mod. I suspect being in good as new condition and with upgrades it well sell for a bit north of $6,000....we'll see what the market is like when I get ready to pull the trigger.

What is the advantage of steel syncros and what are the stockers made of?

Smile Steel Synchros

...synchros made of steel in contrast to stock brass synchros. The make a bit more noise but are more rugged, last longer. Some folks also replace the sliders upon which the synchros rest....that is what I have been told.

$2500 "ring" & pinion is one of the things that bugs me about these cars. That is ridiculous. I know it is a different animal, but you can get any ratio you want for a Ford 9" for $250. And they are strong enough for anything. I have also changed out R&Ps in a Dana axle - no fun, but doable. Ford and Toyota axles are easier due to adjustable collars instead of shims. Sorry for the OT!

I think the Euro C4s have slightly different ratios than the C2. Not sure if my US C4 has the same or not. I have read conflicting info on it. If I understood Frere's book correctly, it is geared different, but have read that the US ones are not.

Smile The $2,500 R&P

ANDIAL was selling these a while back for about $1,600...that was quite a while back...6 years? If these R&P sets were made in Europe we take a beating on the exchange rate...if they are being made here, this is probably not a high volume item.

$2,500...not cheap, but according to a pal that put one into a 964 with a 993 6 speed, the car comes alive in a big way....this is what is getting me enthused about the R&P option.

I am asking California Motorsports (californiamotorsports.net) for a quote to put a R&P in my recently freshened 993 tranny. I am certain it will be about $5,000....

My next option is to sell my freshened tranny for $5,000 to ?, and apply that toward a pal's 933 tranny that has the steel shifting forks, steel synchros on 2nd - 5th and the lower (16%) ring and pinion. He wants about $10,000 for the tranny...this is freaking expensive considering the car is worth about $30,000 (97 Carrera with 75,000 miles)....when I think of this, I start thinking my ole 993 stock tranny is good enough, NOT!

So it looks like we need someone to manufacture gears and R&P sets that won't rape us with a nail encrusted 2 X 4!
