That's all true but the factory set up the /30s in the Cups very loose, much more so than the /31 or /32 in the street cars. They all sound broke when brand new.

Availability. Porsche had one g50/31 and two g50/33s "on the shelf." The gearing on the /30, /31, and /32 are all pretty close anyway. And all are overkill for me as this car is strictly a street car.

Cheers,
Joe

Jeff,

Are you in Southern or Northern Oregon. Seems like we should do some riding some time.

Cheers,
Joe

I think that the CUP is worse yet based on my experience from the even lighter clutch disc and the increased vibrations not dampened by the even stiffer engine mounts.

Portland, we ride the Coast range, however we are headed to China Hat east of Bend in November. Where are you located?

Joe,

Nice work! Now how about a spirited Rennlist drive to break it in?

That is a good point with respect to the crown wheel & pinion. I have driven a 93 CS with G50/32 and 8/32 crown & pinion. It was absolutely frantic and probably no good for more than 130 mph.

Has anyone tried this mod using the standard US spec fitted gearbox ratios?....It would certainly make a difference, just no idea if it would be for the better.

I looked into this. Unfortunately, this will not fix the gaps between the ratios. Instead it will just move them to different speed ranges.

Joe

I have a pal that installed the Ring (Crown) and pinion recently, 16% lower than US Delivered factory specs. He is thrilled with the performance of the car. In the past several months, he has set 2 class records with the car. He is a good driver, but in his words, the R&P really "woke the car up."

I have my eye on this mod....cheaper than going through the gears too.

That makes sense to me, even though there will still be gaps in the gears, I would have thought the revised cwp would reduce these?....

Nope, and the gaps are the real problem with a g50/20. No matter how high you rev the engine, the next shift will take you out of the powerband. That's why a different ring/pinion will not fix the problem.

Joe

I put a 7:31 CWP in the 915 gearbox of my old 911. It definitely woke the car up, but as said above, the CWP does not change the relationship between the gear ratios -- it only lowers the complete gearstack.
