The engine on my ROW '96 VR was rebuilt recently following a big-end failure and the car runs perfectly with one exception : it won't idle when cold. It starts fine but then just dies. After four or five restarts and some sensitive working of the throttle it behaves itself and runs normally once there's a little heat in the engine. The other odd symptom is that it idles too fast when warm, at a little over 1000 RPM. I've checked the resistances on the engine and intake temperature sensors and they seem credible. I took the opportunity while the engine was out to clean the ISV but am wondering if I messed up along the way.
I'll have someone read the OBD codes (OBD I only, unfortunately and I've been unable to find a scanning device to do this myself) to see if it reports any problems but if anyone has direct experience of these symptoms and found the cause I would be grateful if you would pass on the experience.
If there is an OBD I scanner out there other than the Bosch "Hammer" I would be grateful as well for a reference.
