Default Going to attempt the "DIY Suspension Install for Dummies" this morning...

I'm going to attempt tp install Bilstein HD's this morning (Sunday) based on the https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...r-dummies.html DIY. I'm just doing the struts/shocks, no sways or anything else. This write up makes it look like something I can tackle, so I'm going to give it a try.

I ordered and received my shocks & plastic clip bits. I have not opened the boxes of my Bilstein HD's yet, but noticed the part #'s listed on the write up and the part numbers on my boxes differ slightly. The write up shows

F4-VE3-B648-H0 (LF)
F4-VE3-B649-H0 (RF)
F4-BE5-6131-H0 (Rear)

my boxes show...

F4-VE3-B648-H1 (LF)
F4-VE3-B649-H1 (RF)
F4-BE5-6130-H1 (LR)
F4-BE5-6131-H1 (RR)

I'm not concerned with the fact that I have 4 part numbers when the write up lists 3 as I have read somewhere that the rears are the same 6130/6131. I am more concerned with the fact that the write up lists -H0 part numbers and I was shipped -H1 parts. my Invoice clearly states that they are for "Porsche 993 Chassis ONLY"

Anyone else receive these "-H1" parts?

Any other RL'ers bored in the morning and in the Schaumburg area are welcome to stop by and supervise. I will be starting the job around 8:30am or so. If you want to stop by PM me and I'll pm you back my address.

I have changed struts/shocks on an american car before so I believe I can pull this off as the DIY makes it look easy enough. I'll be starting around 8:30am and hope to be done by 1:00pm or so. Wish me luck.

Good luck, please update as you go. I am very interested in your progress, as I'm contemplating the upgrade myself. Did you order the parts from Viper Bob, or elsewhere?

I followed the Tire Rack banner I see at the top of my Rennlist webpage to buy 4 new tires one day and spotted that Tire Rack also had the Bilstein HD's as well and they had a very competitive price on the HD's. So to simplify things I ordered it all at the same time.

Pretty straight forward job. Hope your eccentric bolt doesn't have an attitude. If you run into problems there you can take the hammer to the heat exchanger, or loosen the motor mounts and jack engine to get some clearance.

Don't rush it - give yourself the day.

I've done the same job three times.

I have planned to do it starting early today for just that reason. I am hoping that none of the bolts give me too much trouble. knock on wood. I realize time is more of a factor on making bolts hard to remove. luckily the car only has 36K miles on it and everything looks very clean. Much cleaner even than the pictures in the DIY write up. So hopefully it will go well.

Heading out to the garage now.

Maybe all will go smooth. Mine went fine when I did it except one bolt. Spent o er 2 hours on it and cut the stock shock in half in the process - fun times. Maybe you have a buddy to help.

Good luck. Just replaced my bump stops and I had to teach the mechanic not to force things. I had to tell him to toe out the left rear wheel so the shock can easily be removed from the lower arm.

This is a pretty straight forward project. Follow the DIY and take your time. You will love the results. I'm sure you know this, but you will need an alignment after the install. Pics for the peanut gallery always appreciated

Good Luck!

Couldn't get it right the first 2 times??

Good luck Nick, the end result is a nice improvement over stock. What springs are you using?

First time up for air. had to run to autozone to get DC-AC inverter to power my dremmel. I have an inverter already, but forgot it at work. oops. can never remember everything.

had a hell of a time jacking up the car and getting it on jack stands to where I feel safe working on it.
couldn't fit the floor jack under the car. had to roll it up on a pair of 2 x 12's almost needed two on each side.
The front end is on two floor jacks and two jack stands with the wheels under the car.

As for the springs. I am not sure of the model, but the car has already been lowered and has Eibach's on it. I will see what else I can find out when i'm in there.

back to the garage.

OK fronts are done. I finished at about 2pm so it took me 5 hours to do the fronts. I took my time and didn't rush it as suggested above. However because I chose to take my time I am going to put the rears off at least for today.

Was going to jump into the rears, but I'm outta shape and after doing the fronts I feel like I have been beaten up. There was only one blood letting, where I scraped a 7mm allen wrench across the inside of my wrist. It doesn't hurt but looks like a good scrape. So I have shed blood for her now...

I may have actually jumped into the rears but decided to look at the eight 13 mm shock tower bolts and sat there for a few minutes trying to figure out how I was going to get my fat arms in there.

After feeling like I got beat up and then seeing how the rear shock tower bolts are located I decided the time it would take would be better invested on another day. If I would have started at 6 am instead of 9am maybe I would have gone for it, unfortunately I have some chores to do tonight before work tomorrow.

More to come later.

Remove the airbox and heater blower and it looks a lot better. Good job on the fronts.
