Just curious...I am close to finalizing a deal on a 993 which has listed a CDR 220. I don't know a CDR 210 from a 220 to a door ****....just curious...when the car is delivered how pleased will I be with the sound system...I assume stock speakers.....

Having asked, it's not a factor, not buying a 993 to listen to music....just curious if those of you that have CDR 220 units are happy with them.

Very happy with the CDR 220 myself. It doesn't have all the features of aftermarket radios but it's a nice unit. Mine came with the CDR 210 and I upgraded to the 220, it's newer/much nicer. IMHO

You'll want to upgrade the speakers first. They weren't great to begin with but after 14 yrs they're really crap.

 

CDR-220 is the better unit. I have that in my car and really like it. There are better head units out there, but like you said you are buying the car for the car not the stereo. My car is a 95 model and I had to use an amp and aftermarket speakers to get the unit to work. My car originally came with a CR model. What year is your car?

Not mine yet...still trying to complete the deal...its a 97 C4S....was just curious about the sound system, didn't have a clue as to what a CDR 220 was before searching the web...it was just listed on the features sheet for this car.

I went from a CDR 210 to a 220 so I could use an iPod. Wish I would have done this upgrade years prior. I have the Hifi factory option and for me it serves the purpose just fine. I think its the best setup for decent sound while keeping the factory look.

I've heard if you don't have the hifi option the sound is kinda weak.

Actually it's an Aux input but there is a cable setup that connects it to a Ipod, it's what I use too. A quick search should pull up threads with the detail. I did it 2.5 yrs ago, I don't remember it now.

 

Don't forget the faceplate on the 220 has to be upgraded (display reversed) by Becker so it is can be viewed properly.

I also did the upgrade to the CDR 220 with the ipod connection. The sound is good (very adequate, not concert hall) with the regular speaker set up. Plenty of volume and no crackling sounds at higher volumes.
It's a pretty straight forward unit without many frills and sits perfectly in the 993.

 

Oops. Your correct. But I guess if he wants to add the iPod cable it will have to come in and out again.

 

The CDR 220 is great, as everyone here has said. But you may wish to do a speaker upgrade if they are stock. Pretty cheap to get much better -- and newer -- speakers in there.

 

The iPod cable plugs into the Aux port at the back of the headunit so you'll have to pull it to get access which is not a big deal and described here on several threads. The cable is available directly from Becker (do a web search). Note that it won't display the playlists on the headunit and if the car has a remote CD changer in the trunk that won't work with the iPod setup (they both plug into the same Aux port). I upgraded from 210 to 220 and the improvement is noticable but it's still a far cry from current state of the art. The comment about upgrading speakers is a good one. If you buy the car check to see if that's been done, if not there are lots of threads here on a speaker upgrades too. IMHO a CDR-220 with upgraded speakers is enough to satisfy 80% of users so unless you really need high end sound that should suffice.

 

The factory head unit is decent...the stock speakers are the limiting issue in the factory set up and will probably be due for an upgrade.
