Smile My 235/275

are on standard 993 Cup II 7" front and 9" rear wheels. The Cup IVs from Tire Rack are super light...they are 7 1/2" front and 9" rear. Of course they are made in China...I have a pal that races on them...they work great and they are cheap.

The Cup II wheels are damn heavy....

Thanks that is helpful. is your car lowered as well since mine is. Any issues with rubbing, bulging etc?? Any more pics as would love to see them (or existing pics somewhere already on the site?)

PS i emailed you about that spreadsheet but since you are running these tires I assume they meet the less than 3% criteria. These sizes are available on Tirerack.

Thanks for the info

Smile No issues...

with rubbing and the front to rear delta is under 3%...the killer number. I sent you another version of the spread sheet...it should NOT be copy protected. No bulging either....

What tires on Tire Rack???? Just curious....

the max tire width for a 7x17 is 225/45x17, 235/45x17 wants a minimum of 7.5" and 235/40 wants a minimum of 8"

the max tire width for a 9x17 is 275/40x17

BUT

you also want to match the front and rear heights w/i reason, I think the ABS wants w/i 5% and AWD wants less difference

and

you want to use the widest wheel in a tires spec range for max performance.

so if it were my car w/ 7 & 9 x17, I'd use 225/45 & 255/40 or maybe 265/40

unless you are running Hoosiers which have some tastier choices, but only for hardcore track use

Default Bill is always right on....

He writes, "

the max tire width for a 9x17 is 275/40x17

The 235/45/17 Toya RA-1 fits just fine, although technically it's not supposed to...the 225 mm is the maximum width for the 7" wheel....this is the info that tire mfgs will tell you.

For track use, I have observed that the 235/45/17 will roll over a bit...not a really good thing. When the tire rolls on the sidewall, the contact patch is diminished. Actually I have seen a 245 Kumho 710 mounted on a 7" Cup II wheel...I wouldn't recommend this.

In all candor, the 205 and 255 works great. You get enough sidewall so your ride is not jeopardized. The shorter the tire, the rougher the ride. In the final analysis, listen to Bill...he knoweth of what he speaks!

Well, since you're all about show....

I thought about this too for a bit and decided to go with 18" wheels. Looked for MY02's but never lucked into a good set. Ended up with OZ Alleggerita's. I used the Sumi III's in 235/285 sizes. I probably should have gone with 235/265 for a better balance, but I was going in for a bit of 'show' as well. I will try the 265's next time around, shouldn't be long.

If your Cup's are in good shape you may get around $500+ for them, which would offset the cost of the new 18's. My set was around $2,250 shipped from TireRack, including the tires, all ready to be bolted onto the car. Figure a good set of MY02's at $1,200-1,400 (more if they need repair or refinishing) VS $1,600 for the Alleggerita's, but the latter come to you or your preferred shop with tires already mounted and balanced... The latter also are new, so you don't have to worry about surprises upon receiving the shipment, I think they have something like a 2 year finish warranty, and they're lighter by a total of ~14lbs for the set over the MY02's, which are light to begin with.

Sorry!

As for your question about ride height, post up some shots of your car and I'm sure someone here can estimate where you are with regard to US, RoW, etc.

My Cups have quite a few scratches on them so probably wouldnt get a great price unless I had them refinished (which I will if I keep them). I have looked at tons of rim options but frankly have not found anything that really grabs me. I know the MY02 are a popular choice here but again they dont do anything for me personally. I think the 17"s look pretty good on the car and since it is lowered they fill out the wheel well quite nicely in my opinion.

So....will probably go with the 205/255 and refinish the Cups until I find that rim that i REALLY need to have

Thanks all

Default Good DE tire choices in 17's?

WHile we're on the subject, I'm thinking of relegating my 17 Cup II's to track only duty.

Do any you have recommendations on good track-capable tires currently available in 225/45 255/40? I have not 'graduated' to R compunds yet, but that would probably be a logical choice.

Thanks for any input.

Matt

Smile Tires...

There are 3 of the more popular vendors in 17" selling so called DOT "R" tires
Kumho VictoRacers and 710 40 hardness rated*
Hankook Z 214 40 rated
Nitto NT-01 100 rated
Toyo RA-1 100 rated (Sorry here, now pretty much out of stock) Toyo has shifted to R-888, tires that have failed to gain acceptance over the past few years. Toyo will be re-intoducing the RA-1 in three (3) SCCA Spec sizes. 275/40/17 will be one of the sizes available. An interesting option, RA-1 on the rear in 275/40/17 and Nitto NT-01 225s on the front.

Hardness rating about the same as wear rating. The lower the # the softer the tire...but note, it is an inter-company thing. A 100 tire from Brand A may be different than a 100 rating from Brand B.

None of these tires does well on the street...soft = poor wear and soft = picking up debris off the road....

Thanks Martin - I was able to get a few possible answers by checking out Toyo and Michelin websites - looks like (stock dependent) RA-1's, 888's, and MPSC may be options.

To be honest though, I may not be ready for R comounds. I am running less than 2 degrees neg camber, and may be overly complicating things by getting tires that require a more aggressive alignment. I drive about 6K miles a year (summer only) with about 10 track days. Tough to find a good compromise. My last alignment was super agressive and I wore rears (insides) out in about 4K miles... Now that I've backed off the alignment, I'd likely have the opposite problem, outside wear due the much higher grip.

Maybe just get a really good set of street tires?

Matt
