Hate to bring it up this time of year but in Toronto winter can come fast....
Sold my G35 as it wasnt exactly a winter car so I will be in the market for something for winter use. Want AWD, could be car or small truck (need 4 seats but not planning on hauling anything except some skiis), could spend $15-20k, would like something fun and open to suggestions or comments on what others find that works
Many thanks and lets hope I dont need to use it till December (wishful thinking....)

B5 S4. You can find them with pretty low mileage for less than $20k. The down side to this car is that they need new suspension parts and a TB every 60 - 80k miles.
They are quick as all get out and stable as hell at speed.
Snow it up and it will go anywhere.
GL!

The best winter car I've owned recently was a 1991 BMW 325IX. I bought it for $5K, put maybe $1.5 into it but drove it for 3 years and 18K miles and sold it for $5000K. I dealt with maintenance like timing belts, brakes, shocks, and transfer case fluid changes. Its relatively a rare car but parts are easy to find and the looks are classic E30 if thats what you like.
PS - they even come equipped with a ski bag thru the rear seats armrest and fixed rear windows

Vern,
By far, the best "Winter Beater" is an Audi A4 Quatro (they practically invented the 4-wheell drive system). I'm on my 2nd Audi Wagon Avant 200hp ( 2006 model), bought it in the US for $ 29,000 CAN in the fall of 2007. You can probably pick one up for your price range by now... lots of features including heated seats... a "MUST", for where I live... Calgary, Alberta.
Good Luck,
Bert

Vern:
Subaru. I'm on my third one now, a 2007 Legacy Wagon, and they're very impressive.
My wife has a 2001 A4 and she loves it, but there are reliability issues.

Im an SUV person---lifestyle requires it so I will never suggest a car car to anyone.
I like the Mountain Man/Woman Grocery Getter---Subaru Outback XT---has a turbo, AWD, and I hear they are a blast to drive.
If I needed a 5th car, it may be an Outback XT. An example with no affiliation.

BMW E46 330XI 2004 manual with 6speed. No Idrive and the nicest shape of 3 series generation sedans. Should be right in your price range but will have to search hard for manuals.
