As an update, my car's all back together as of tonight. I'm going to head to a local shop in the AM and have the system evacuated and re-charged... fingers crossed.
I have to say, this was a VERY tough DIY... second time would be twice as efficient but the first time around took me two full weekend days plus an evening or two. Anybody out there considering this repair can certainly benefit from some recent experience and I am willing to provide any insight, unprofessional as it may be.
Thanks for all the input and I will post the results of my recharge soon.

Good job Jeff and when you take it to the shop for a charge they will pull the vacuum on it (they should) for at least 15 minutes to verify no leaks...prior to filling it.

FINAL UPDATE
Took her in yesterday for a flush, vacuum/pressure check, and recharge... everything's great!! AC's blowing cold and the car runs wonderfully (phew, I didn't miss any parts!).
I'm very pleased with myself I must say... started to doubt I could get it done at one point but perserverance paid off.
I'll post a few more pics when I get a moment. Thanks to everyone who provided advice... VERY satisfying project but a big time investment.

Ha, funny! It's actually "up there", not "back there". I suppose if you removed the whole air box there'd be some weight savings. Compressor is probably the best bang for your buck.
