I don't recall anyone asking me if I minded my portion of the National Debt increasing to finance this program.
If you used the "Cash for Clunkers" program for your gain, I at least expect a thank you to me and all the other tax payers that did not participate since we got nothing out of it but more debt.

Paul, I also have a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport and I am trying to use it as a Clunker credit for a new car too. But the problem I had at the dealer was that the MPG Rating section in the "cars.gov" web site were missing the fuel rating information for the entire 1997 Montero Sport vehicles, therefore I could not close the deal on this new car for my wife. May I ask you how did your dealer approved your 1997 Montero Sports for the Cash for Clunker's program?
Really appreciated if you can help.
Thanks so much.

I printed off the information for the 1998 model year Montero Sport which has the same engine code, and also the 1997 model year full size Montero. The dealer seemed to use a different website. They found what they needed eventually.

I don't recall anyone asking me if I minded contributing towards this nearly $1 Trillion portion of the National Debt either. But I do.
June 18 (Bloomberg) -- A $106 billion war-spending bill won final congressional approval after the Senate voted to retain a “cash for clunkers” provision aimed at helping the auto industry.
Action by the Senate today sends the measure to President Barack Obama for his signature. The Senate passed the bill on a 91 to 5 vote; the House approved the measure earlier this week.
The legislation provides more than $82 billion to fund military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, which would bring total spending on the wars to more than $900 billion.
The White House has said the legislation will be the last time the administration relies so-called “supplemental” appropriations bills to pay for war-related expenses.
Such bills, which are considered outside Congress’s annual budget process and are exempt from yearly spending caps, are supposed to be reserved for unexpected expenses. Former President George W. Bush relied on the bills to fund the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, which critics, including some Republican lawmakers, said made it more difficult to keep spending in check.
The bill is H.R. 2346.

Thanks for the reply Paul.
I guess your Montero Sport was a 4WD because my is a 2WD LS, and I just found out from Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) that they also have a vehicle combined mpg search, and the 2WD is not qualified for the Cash for Clunker program. I am sure kbb.com is one of the main source where the EPA or the fueleconomy.gov is getting their combined mpg from, and therefore I am out of luck. Again, thanks anyway for your reply.

Mine was the 4WD LS with the 3.0 engine. All the 3.0 engine have a combined mpg of 17/18 mpg. I think only the 2.4 engine doesn't qualify, combined mpg is listed as 21.

According to kbb.com the combined mpg (cmpg) for the Montero Sport are:
1997 1998 1999
ES 2WD 2.4L 5-SP manual 23 cmpg 21 cmpg 20 cmpg
LS 2WD 3.0L automatic 20 cmpg 18 cmpg 17 cmpg
LS 4WD 3.0L automatic 15 cmpg 17 cmpg 17 cmpg
XLS 2WD 3.0L automatic n/a 18 cmpg 17 cmpg
XLS 4WD 3.0L automatic 15 cmpg 17 cmpg 17 cmpg
Limited 2WD 3.0L auto n/a n/a 16 cmpg
Limited 4WD 3.0L auto n/a n/a 16 cmpg
If kbb.com are really correct, then Mitsubishi must have changed or adjusted something in this 3.0L engine from 1997 to 1998 and to 1999. My happens to be the only one 3.0L engine that doesn't qualifies for the cash for clunker program.

Why cant the govt just give me $8k for being a responsible home(s) owner and $4500 for not driving a clunker?
If I had a clunker and was in the market for a new car, I would take advantage of the program.

This program seems to create a problem for buyers without a clunker. I am trying to buy a car and dealers told me to wait unless I'm willing to pay msrp.
