Default Airbag Control Unit - Limited to 3 resets???

When my car was hit in the parking lot, it triggered the airbag light. When the tech went to the body shop, he determined that it could not be reset since it had already been reset too many times. He said something like the control unit is good for 3 resets before it locks you out.

I searched 100 threads and did not find anything on this. Does anyone here know if this is true or not?

They are ordering the part now and it's ultimately on the Ins. Co's dime but I'd still like to know what's up with this.

thanks!

I can't believe something as simple as this could stump the Rennlist community!

Somebody out there must have some experience with this???

Iirc there was a limit to how much crash data could be stored in a unit, but not how many resets it could have. We have had to replace units before after airbag deployment. I know for a fact a coupld cars that we reset the airbag lights well over 3 times, mine included. Hopefully it all works out and comes back from the body shop better than new.

Thanks for the insight. This car has no prior crash damage so maybe this is a random failure like some of the others I have read about on here and just happens to coincide with the car getting hit.

If that's the case, I sure feel better about having to pay my $500 deductible since the part alone is more than that (at Body Shop prices anyway).

I saw the car before they finished polishing and assembly and it looked very good. I'll post pics when I get it back.

Thanks,
David

airbag modules do go bad, even without trigger history. Must be a coincidence.
