I used about 14 T5 four footers with the Day Light tubes for my 24x26 garage. It's bright but not overly so and I believe just about 1 watt/square foot. I would estimate that 1 to 1.5 watts/square foot would be a good range. Some even go with 2 watts/square foot but it depends on what you want, wall colors, ceiling height, layout, etc.
