RIVI BLUE CAB - UPDATED Body is painted PICS
Well there is progress on the car. Here are some pics with descriptions of what is happening. Enjoy
These 4 pics are of the car yesterday in the final stage of primer and prep. We spent sooooo much time in the prep and prime stage that I thought the car was never going to get painted. I have to admit I was the sanding jockey. All the professional result were done by a 35 year veteren. The quarter panel you see here needed to be fully primed it was sandblasted pretty good.
The left quarter panel wasn't as blasted as the right. Priming the panels before paint gives a better finish. We were working with 14 year old paint and 90k plus miles.
We decided to prime the entire front end (the hood was stripped to bare metal) we all know what rocks chips do to our cars. Plus with the headlight washer delete we went all the way.
Here is the rear bumper I had re-worked. I removed those warts we call bumperettes. So far I have deleted the front/rear bumperettes and headlight washers. I wanted to have the Euro look bumpers.
I bought a new TT Euro bumper. The used US version I had proved to be past its intended life. Since I have gone to this level of restoration I went ahead and bought the new bumper from Gert. Here we have the hoels filled
Here the car is in the booth with the sealer applied. The sealer is a spray that "seals" the primer and other painted areas of the car. This is applied before the paint so you wont have bleed thorugh or see places where body work was done.
The car is now ready for paint. The entire car is rubbed down with a tack rag. This removes all dust and particles that adhere to the surface and give you the dreaded dust nibs.
Here is a pic of the sealer applied. Kind of hard to see, but there is a sheen on the quarter panel.
Here is the paint they used Glasurit 2 stage. Code 39E (Riviera Blue). I bought a gallon mixed so when they painted the car in stages the color would always match. This is best because mixing the paint each time you were going to paint something could lead to a mismatch. All the paint coming from 1 source the color remains the same. Also I will have a quart or so remaining for any paint repairs down the road. This also ensures an exact match.
Here is the base coat after 3 coats have been applied. Notice the color is a bit on the dull side. The shine comes when the clearcoat is applied. 3 coats of base and 3-4 coats of clear. Here are the base pictures.
Here are the final pictures of the car after 3 of the coats of clear have been applied. The car will get 1 more (since I am color sanding) an be baked overnight. Baking gives the paint a hard surface that can be worked sooner. The doors, TT tail, bumpers, side skirts and all the small parts will be shot in the next day or so.
As more gets done I will be posting the progress. I should have the car back at my shop on Thursday or Friday. Once I get it back the color sanding process begins. Stay tuned.
