OT: Garmin Nav Question ?
Simple question about mounting location: Does the unit need to be positioned so it has a clear "view" skyward? I want to get a Garmin portable unit for my daily (Discovery II) and I'd like to mount/tuck it up in the front most portion of the center console, up in front of the gear shifter and the transfer case lever. It would be nicely recessed in there, but would it not get any satelite signal there?

I have used it stuck on the clock face but have recently purchased a clip that attaches it to the vanes on the center air vent. It works fine either way. There are a great many places that sell a wide variety of attachments. I have purchased a few and finally have one I like. Just Google Garmin Nuvi Accessories

When my Nuvi 770 is not directly positioned to the satellites it takes much longer to initially locate the signal after I turn it on. Once it locks the signal I can put it anywhere in the car and it never loses it again. (except tunnels, covered lots, etc).

SD,
kr994 is correct - satellite aquisition will take a while or not happen at all, depending on how tucked away the unit is when mounted. Sounds like you're going to hide it a bit. Also, if aquisition does happen, the 'refresh' time may be affected.
Youi may want to see if Garmin offers a remote antenna for the unit you are considering. Garmin is the best - I have Garmin aviation and cycling GPS units. First rate product support - they answer the phone and everything... in Kansas !!

Here is the one I use; works like a hot damn:

It does not move, even under hard cornering on rough pavement, and it's close to your line of sight.
