Default DMV Trip Permit

Hi all,

I'm picking up my new 993 this Sunday up in Massachusetts and driving it back to Virginia Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. I went to the Virginia DMV this morning, explained what I was doing -- they took the new car's VIN, my license, SS# etc. and produced a three day DMV trip permit good from the date on the bill of sale. The permit also shows that I'm driving the car from Massachusetts to Virginia. I asked "Does that mean that I drive the car without any license plates at all?". She said that was exactly correct -- no plates and keep the DMV temp permit on my dashboard.

Has anybody else done this? It seems to me that driving a Guards red 993 over 600 miles of highway with no plates on it is a recipe for making all sorts of badge wearing and uniformed new friends. Anybody else ever done this?

I drove my 993 from Phoenix to Edmonton (Canada) with no plate. I did have the 30 day temp AZ permit in the rear window. It was designed to be stuck there.

George:

I think the cops are used to this. There are all kinds of vehicles on the road that have transit permits taped to various places.

I would make a couple of extra photocopies of the permit, put one in a zip lock, and tape it to the back window as well, where the troopers can easily see it.

If they pull you over, they will also be interested in your title and insurance, as well.

Exactly right. In California when you buy a new car or a used car where the PO has taken his plate (usually because it's a vanity plate) you drive around "plateless" until DMV gets around to mailing you a new one, sometimes weeks or months later. The only caveat is that if the cops WANT to pull you over they have automatic just cause so don't use this trip to smuggle your moonshne back with you.

Hi All,

Good enough. I'll make some copies to stick everywhere.
