You can get a DME relay just about anywhere... last time I checked, best price will be Sunset Imports in Or. if you have time.

Congrats and have a great trip!

good luck Bonni - and +1 on the DME relay. I had one die on the way in the mountains in TN driving back a new to me 964. Luckily I had a cell fone and AAA card handy. If you have the time, as MarkD says, Sunset is the best bet. If not, then your local dealer should have them

I will check with the local smocal dealer for the DME, as Oregon is a bit out of the way. I am likely staying in town until probably Saturday -- want to check out the San Diego Zoo among other sites. I've never been this far south in California -- it is definitely a lot different than home! So far the only pics I have taken are of the incredible traffic heading south on I-5. I feel for you SoCal folks!

Bonster,
Welcome to the 993 community! You will love it here!

It is required to post pics of your new acquisition, and we are a photo loving bunch, so highlights of your trip are encouraged.

BTW, I think you still owe OT some pics from the BCS promise you made earlier this year (wink, wink!)
we'll forgive if you post pics of the 993 though, welcome to the slippery slope!

While you are in SD Balboa Park and Old Town are nice places to visit. If you have a little time, the drive up to Julian is nice, perfect for a 911 actually, stop and have some apple pie, it IS THAT GOOD!

Bonnie, you'll have a blast driving your dream car back home.
A few weeks ago I drove my new C2S from GA to NY.
The flight from NY to Atlanta took me just about 2 hours then I drove it back for 3 days... I got a chance to visit my old friends in Greenville, SC. They live just 15 minutes from the BMW plant so we took a tour to the “Zentrum” (it was great but my car was defintely standing out in the parking lot )

Next day I drove north 700 miles to visit my friends in Lancaster, PA...
I did not have my iPod with me but the PO left an old CD in the car... I was never a big fan of Willie Nelson, but there is nothing like blasting through the Great Smoky Mountains in your dream Porsche doing 90 mph and listening to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru40GiejGDg

Bonnie, here's hoping that the car passes the PPI with flying colors and you have a safe trip home in your "new" 993. I bought mine in December and didn't have too far to drive it home (from SoCal to NorCal), but it was the perfect opportunity to bond with the car. Listening to the flat 6 purring behind me turned what could have been a boring drive up I-5 into a great experience. 5 1/2 hour trip? Felt like 10 minutes! Best of luck.

Welcome to the 993 family! And good deal on the early 95s, IMHO. No SAI port/OBDII headaches, no immobilizer silliness but still has an alarm, and a normal key. Not to mention that sexy "basket handle"

+100 on stopping off at a local dealership for a DME relay. Good insurance to have in your glove box, even at the inflated stealer price of about 45bucks. These things just quit w/o warning (yup, happened to me), and feels like someone just cut the motor ...DOA ...done. If I were you, I would replace it in the parking where you get it (fuse box in trunk, pass side under the carpet), and use your existing relay (notice it'll prob have a 944 part number) as the spare. Enjoy the sights and weather as SoCal has lots of both! Ya bring a camera? ...upload your coast-to-coast victory lap and share with the brethren!

Covering THAT distance at highway speeds on mostly interstates -- with the nose of 'our' cars being so low -- is tempting fate.

+1 on the spare DME relay.

Also, before you go - MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO TAKE OUT AND INFLATE THE SPARE TIRE.
This will take you all of 30 mins - but will allow u to test the air-pump etc. and become 'familiar' with what's required. You do NOT want to be out in the middle of no-where discovering that your air-pump ..."doesn't!"

Gerry
If your air pump is missing, get a temporary cheapie one from Big 5 sporting goods or wherever. I doubt you'll find a bra at this point, but the lovely blue "painter's tape" from Home Depot would do the trick temporarily on your mirrors and the front bumper.

For the DME, I think your stealer in SD is Pioneer Centres on Miramar road, although you could also search for "german auto parts" on Yahoo yellow pages.

I would route my trip home though Austin. Lots of friendly 'Listers there who could hook you up with safe overnight parking (oh yeah, and a great town, too!)

Have a wonderful trip in the "new car". I am envious of your drive and your wrenching skills. Take lots of pictures to keep us informed on your journey.

We need to see some pictures, how about posting one every 500 miles or the closest touristy stop?

I also drove mine back from NC last year. Fun little road trip.

I also got a ticket earlier this week (in AL).

Cops in AL don't screw around! (Actually, they are usually not too bad)

Bonni,
For DME relays, there's Hohen Porsche up "nawth" of SD on the 5 and Pioneer Porsche on Miramar Rd near I-15. Black Forest or Dieter's, a couple of the local indys would possibly have a stash of them. You're not far from any of these if you'll be up north and heading to the Zoo (which rocks! spend some time wandering Balboa Park around the Zoo as well....awesome place just to wander around, nice gardens, architecture, museums).

If you want a bra, I believe I might know someone here in SD who has a NB 993 bra he doesn't use....PM me.

I'm sooo jealous. I LOVE travel, driving and cross country trips! Take the interesting roads as much as possible, not just the straight shot I-40/I-8/I-10. Ok, across TX, you don't have much of a choice!

Oh, I meant to say, the correct part # is 993 615 227 00 for the DME relay.

You can also download the Porsche electronic parts catalog (PET) from this site:

When I moved east from LA in '94, I drove cross-country. My wife wasn't coming east for a couple of months, so a friend decided to drive with me and fly home. We were in an E Class sedan, so we were very comfortable, but our mistake was in making it a quick trip. We averaged about 11 hours per day for 4 days from LA to Delaware. If I had it to do over (I'd love to), I'd take at least a week to 10 days and enjoy the country. However you decide to do it, enjoy.
