Yeah but then one has to wait longer to rationalize a close-ratio gearbox!

Not for me,...that one is a no-brainer, given the huge difference it makes,......

Hi Steve, pardon my ignorance, but can you explain the benefits of having close ratio gears, and how involved is this upgrade?

Hi Vic,

Close-ratio gears, such as what the Carrera RS and RS Clubsport came with, reduces the RPM drop at each shift thus keeping the engine between peak torque & peak power. The result is much improved acceleration,...

There are many different ratios to choose from depending on how the car will be used. The RS and RSCS gear stacks are both pretty decent and there are other options, too.

The transmission must be disassembled to do this and if you have a '96-'98 car, you will need an early ('95 993 or RS/CS mainshaft) to allow changing 2nd gear. We generally leave first gear alone unless its a race car.
