Check Strap Question

Check Strap Question
I read Chris' write up on PcarWorkshop, and I have a few questions:
1) My car makes no noise, but doesn't stop at any of the detents. Is that the same problem? If it isn't, what else should I look for?
2) How much are the check straps if you just want to replace them? I find whenever I have to do surgery on a part, I usually just end up buying news ones because I'm unhappy with my work.
Thoughts?

Well that sounds like the door stay mechanism inside the door. Either it is worn, broken or possibly loose off its mount. Can you see any movement inside the door? The problem is usually that the stops are too firm and work the mount on the door jam till it breaks loose. Some people modify the mechanism to make the stops less abrupt to minimize damage to the door jam. You can remove the thing by carefully removing the pin at the jam and 2 bolts I believe in the door. Have to remove the door panel as it comes out backwards into the door. See this for removing and modifying. http://p-car.com/diy/doorcheck/ Some folks just grind down the bumps on the strap. Maybe someone modified yours?
If yours is just worn or broken a new one from Pelican is $58.
