Alternator bearing replacement help
#18
You can get the old bearing out by knocking it out and being very careful in supporting the fan. I made a wood support and used a large wood dowel to get it out.
The safest way to get the new bearing in is probably with a press.
caveat: I'm not a mechanic so this is a novice DIY advise

One more tip I thought about after my posting. Take the time to make a diagram of the parts as you take them off. There are 2 pulley halves, spacers, washers, etc. and it can get confusion. You may want to mark the location of the fan/bearing on the old shaft before removing.
Good luck!

The RS hub is a great mod, and really not that difficult.
I was going to rebuild my alternator myself, but ultimately decided against it. When it's time to pull the engine for the clutch job, I'm just going to buy a new alternator and send the core in. I think this costs something like $275 through Sunset, versus endless searching for brush packs, bearings, and a voltage regulator. I've also heard that some of these parts are el-cheapo knockoffs made in China that will fail in 20K miles anyway. No thanks. This is one of those rare cases in which I'd rather save the time and labor and uncertainty and just get a new one.

Three Wheelin'
Faster, you got that part correct (at least when I look at the pic on Pelican). I am surprised no one has them. The shims are also readily available if you need more - but boy, what a friggin rip off at like $5 or $6 a piece for a circle of stamped metal...
Luftkuhler, that's the same POS puller I used. Brings back memories! I never thought I'd be a Harbor Freight groupie - how embarrasing.

I purchased a rebuilt alternator and new fan bearing from Sunset last year: alternator was around $190, and the fan bearing was around $100.
