Anybody come from a car with far more power?
So heres the rub gentlemen:
I like speed and power. I realize that my current car (700rwhp) is a bit overkill, but there is something to be said for getting planted in the seat like you got shot out of a cannon.
That said, I also appreciate the fine handling of a porsche and the other enjoyable attributes that my current car lacks.
So, has anybody come from an extremely powerful car to the 282bhp 993 and been happy with the acceleration?
I like the 993 turbos, but I have qualms with spending $65-70k for a well sorted example.
Thoughts?

Nothing even close to 700rwhp, but I had a 997 (a new 911) and a BMW 550i. Neither of those cars come even close to the fun, visceral and involved experience of driving an air-cooled 911.

My 03 Dinan III M3 was faster than my 993, and I couldn't care less. This doesn't mean that you will feel the same way though. This car is the most fun you can have going 60.

I understand where you guys are coming from, but 400 and even 450bhp cars are just in another world. I've driven a 993 and it was "fun", but I have a feeling I'd be longing for more power after just a few months.

I think if you are used to more power, you probably won't be happy with a non-turbo 993.
I bought a '96 C4 two years ago, and I think my stock 2004 Audi S4 is probably faster. I sold the 993 last fall. 993's are very neat, but........
Of course, it probably didn't help that the 993 replaced a Ford GT that I concluded was too expensive and impractical to keep.

700rwhp in a convertible stang must feel insane. I had a 430hp supercharged vette, a 600hp Buick Grand national which were both exciting on the drag strip. The 993 is a pig compared to those two and even more of a pig to your beast in a straight line.
So to answer your question:
"So, has anybody come from an extremely powerful car to the 282bhp 993 and been happy with the acceleration?"
No! But that did not stop me from buying another one 5 years later. All depends on your intentions for the 993. For me the rush of driving the 993 on road tracks out weigh the rush I got from lifting up the front wheels when drag racing the GN.
There is just something special about the 993, but you have to appreciate it for what it is. About 3 months ago, I was considering selling my 993 to purchase a 996 TT. I thought long and hard and with the help of this forum, I thought about why I came back to a 993 in the first place and realized I would rather see my white 993 in the garage when I come home from a long day at work then a 996 TT. Of course if money wasn't an issue, I'd have a 993 TT in it's place. However, once I get on the track and just enjoy the car for what it is, all the thoughts of owning something different fade away. If you are not a die hard 993 enthusiast, the 996 TT has got to be the best bang for the buck these days and can be modified very easily, if 400 hp isn't enough. If you are that hung up on horsepower and don't care for the 996 chassis, I'd break the bank and go for a 993 TT, especially if you have no intentions on tracking the car and just want something for the weekends and fun runs. I removed the supercharger from my 993 because it spends more of it's time on the track and the SC just wasn't the right thing for track days. I do miss it A LOT when cruising the streets.

fwiw, I've had several much faster cars. But in the end, the only place (on the street) that I could really drive them was short moments on the freeway or out in the desert (which meant an hour long drive for me.) And then there was the constant lookout for cops.
Unless I will track a car, I find no reason anymore for max HP. Decent torque is a different story since that's even fun at low speeds
Funny thing is that most of my best memories come from my old BMW 2002tii. A true slowpoke in the modern world but incredibly fun to drive. Same with the 993. I guess I just don't need the "pushed into the seat" feel anymore.
But then there are always the roller coaster rides up at Magic Mountain.....

I've definitely looked at and considered the 996tt. Performance is quite impressive, but that interior is just...well...disappointing.
I drove a C6 Z06 yesterday, and was impressed, but wasn't sure I saw $38k of additional value over the stang.
Al, you make a good point, and I'm going to ponder it, and draft a response in a bit.
now its time for dinner while looking through ebay. its a sickness I tell you.

I've owned probably 50 automobiles in my lifetime, among them numerous BMW M5's and an e46M3, a '96 Cobra w/a Vortech and a '95 Cobra R w/full race STEEDA suspension. I came to realize that balance, refinement and feed-back are more important to me than sheer power and speed. Two years ago, I came back to Porsche after a 35 year absence. I could have bought a new one and one with more power but the 993 has all the attributes I want in an automobile: It's a personal car with timeless beauty, functional design, great sensory feedback, manageable power, excellent handling and last of the air-cooled Porsches. There will always be a 993 in my garage.

Quadcammer,
If you find it's not enough bhp as you did with your stang when you bought it, then head down the slippery slope of mods.
If BHP is your game, then the twin turbo 964 from Glen Cove, NY with over +1100 bhp in Excellence this month might do it. 227 MPH at the Texas mile.
I've had cars with considerably more HP that were a handful to drive in anything other than a straight line. Nothing comes close to the fun of tossing the 993 around.

It's a lot more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow.
After a few powerful cars, I decided that I prefer a car that is not doing 100+ as I shift into 3rd and hit the brakes about the same time.

To the original poster - look at 928 to get power and torque, more predictable (if more mundane) handling, lower price, etc. They are not 911, they are different animals. Not my cup of tea, but if power is what you are after...
My race car has 140HP. Plenty enough for me. I would actually gladly drive a 90hp Alfa or a 356 cab on the street. But we each have our preferences.
