Whatever T30 driver or socket you purchase, be sure that it'll fit in the hole and that you have enough clearance. If you use a socket, don't let it pull off and get stuck in the hole.

i'm in the process of replacing the retaining frame, and FWIW, the frame that i got had a part number of 993 347 088 01, and it is not a fit for a 96. this frame mounts the air bag about 12mm further out. IOW the original frame is recessed into the steering wheel more. now the part # was not stamped on the frame, but a tag on the bag, so i'll speak with the parts desk tomorrow to see what the proper part is.

but otherwise it has been an easy fix.
