Default Looking for a head unit...

I have grown out of the CR210 tape deck and I'm looking into getting a CDR or third party head unit for the 993. I narrowed it down to Alpine, Pioneer and few others. What is the general preference for a CD system in a 993?

I am the National Account Manager for JVC. We make a few UNIQUE Single Din units.

KDNX5000 (single DIN with NAV)
KDAVX77 (Single DIN with Bluetooth and a video screen)
KDAVX40 (Kameleon, with Bluetooth and video)

Look at those models @ www.mobile.jvc.com

I also have a CR210 in my car and decided to upgrade to the CDR220. SW Stereo (advertises in Panorama and other Porsche mags) has these with the faceplate mod needed for 993. The unit has arrived already; I am still traveling but hope to get it installed tomorrow. The install is supposed to be simple and has been documented on this site and (I believe) on p-car DIY site. The SW Stereo guy also offered to be on the phone for assistance when I do it.

Here is the link for SW Stereo; no affiliation. http://www.swstereo.com/stereos.php

Regards,
David

Hey jainbaby, since you're in the business, can you answer a question?

Why do all these head units still take CDs? I could understand keeping a couple of CD models, like there were still one or two cassette models in every mfr's line for years. Imagine what you could do with the space you save--a better amp, bluetooth, an internal hard drive.

Several brands (Alpine, Blaupunkt) are digital only now.

99Three (or anyone else interested), I have a Pioneer P-5901-B in the box with all installation instructions and manual. It is an IPOD/MP3 ready unit and virtually brand new. Also have an ECLIPSE amplifier model EA3422 (4x40 Watts) in like new condition with a mounting board and all monster cables labelled and ready to hook up. Will sell individually or as a package at an absolutely, ridiculously low price. Just PM me.
Just posted 9 pics of the head unit and the amp in my Photo Album. Have a look!

Just installed an Alpine CDA-9886. It has USB, MP3, 4 volt output, sub output, etc. I think there are many decent units out there and it just depends on the looks, price and features you are after. It is hard to find simple, less flashy units though. Some of the biggest differences from model to model were the USB/Ipod interfaces and how they operated not to mention aesthetics.

RallyJon,

What you are looking for is coming soon, but honestly, I have sat in Japan and asked for this a hundred times, the problem is until unit velocity is increased tremendously the cost to remove CD mech and add a good high quality tripath or hypex digital is too much.

For example, if we remove the CD mech, we do not save $30 in build cost. And the digital chip amps are still pretty costly.

In about 2-3 years, I see this being the norm.

+1
I just bought the same unit for my cab. Pretty happy with it and was looking for "simple and less flashy" too. I ended up with the 9886.
The one I pulled out was really annoying... flashing, pulsing lights... and it was an Alpine.

I put in an Alpine 9586 a couple of years ago. Very happy with it. looks good, not too flashy, works well with my ipod. I like listening to the exhaust note more, though......
