Wheel sizes vs. ride comfort

Doug, my 96 came with 17 inch Cups. Put brand new P-Zero all around. Put about 1,000 miles on them and they rode great. Came across a set of turbo twists in 18 inch with well used Conti 2s on them. Paid $400 for the set in good, not great shape. They looked great but rode hard. Tended to follow the cuts in the freeway way to much. I switched back to the 17s last weekend, needed new tires and just didn't want to shell out $1000 to $1200. I had forgotten how well the 17s, with new tires rode and handled, wow! (I also feel much more secure that I am not going to blow a tire at speed, the old tires were really worn) I still like the look of the 18 better, but for ride and at least perceived performance, the 17s are pretty nice. Keep an eye out, it seems like 17s come along fairtly often for $500 +/- depending on the tires. 18s may run you $100 or $200 more. Best of luck. Phil

They don't need refinishing. They are in great shape.
For refinish, there is a mobile guy around town who does them for @$80 per wheel. I once had them done on an NSX and they looked nice. I will be calling him when I decide to do the old Ferrari.

My car is curently running on 16" cup IIs running on Bridgstone S02s and I also have a set of 18" hollow spokes with Conti N2s in the garage.
To be honest, there isn't a massive difference in ride quality between the two. The 16"s have a softer edge over bumps and rough roads but as a trade off the turn-in isn't as sharp as the 18"s. There's no getting away from the fact that a 993 is never going to be a comfortable ride regardless of the wheels and tyres used.
If you want 17"s then go for it, but get the lightest wheel you can and a tyre with a softer edge and I'm sure you'll be very happy.

Hmm, I like the quasi-edgy ride with the 18's, even on long trips. I guess it's what one gets used to. After driving the 993 a lot, my truck feels like a bathtub riding on balloons and bedsprings.
