Default Short Shift Advice Requested

Hi. I'm a new 993 owner, after having a 968 for 7 years. My '95 993 coupe has lots of upgrades and extras but one thing that's missing IMHO is a short shift kit. The throws are way too long for my taste.

Can anyone recommend a manufacturer or model? I've found the B&M model at Pelican Parts. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I bought a Weltmeister kit that I am going to start on today so I will post details at a later date. It eliminates the 2 ball cups that can fail. Do a search on Weltmeister vs. RS and you can decide.

I Dunno; that depends on what you're used to driving. The throw lengths using the G50 in my 964 felt like a truck compared to my S2000, Miata's, or even my old (much loved) MR2 Turbo. Even my 2004 Boxster has much longer throws than I'd like. Ive been thinking about getting a GT3 shifter for the Boxster. I understand they are a direct swap.
As to the original question. Do an advanced search. You'll find tons of threads about the various short-shifters. Or hopefully some of the Track/AutoX guys will weigh-in.

Just giving you a hard time. Seriously let us know how you like it. I had to laugh because I went from an SC with the 915 tranny (Now those were long shifts) to the 993 G50.

I don't think you will ever get a 993 to shift like an s2000 or even a honda civic for that matter. There just seems to be a lot more force required on a 993 to engage the gears, and a longer throw provides better leverage. Like it or not, a lot of the Japanese cars set the standard for quick, short, effortless shifts (unless you include some of the F1-inspired manaul/autos). I'm not sure why they are so much smoother/lower effort, but it might be a tradeoff against durability.

I installed the B&M in my '95 shortly after acquiring it. I agree...the OEM shifter is "mush" and I never was quite sure just which gear I was going into...very dangerous at high rpm! The B&M is a straight-forward install and it did correct the vagueness and shortened the throw,, however, as stated above, the ball linkage is the "weak link" (pun intended).

I had the factory short shift lever in my 993, but I took it back out. It is very well made, and works well, but it increases the shifting effort too much for my taste. Also, I think that if you shift these gearboxes fast, you'd better get to know a good transmission shop--it tends to wear the internals quickly.

The factory rs lever is what I have and enjoy. It is 25% reduction I believe and was about $100 when I got it. The BM is more aggressive, 40% reduction? but I have heard mixed reviews.

As Cactus mentions the Weltmeister replaces the front portions cup joints with heim joints. I believe that has the same reduction as the rs shifter. I have been passively watching for one of these...

I have used the B&M short shifter on two 993s and like the shifter a lot over the stock unit. I would use it again.

I've had the opportunity to drive several 911s on track and I found I liked the RS unit, but compared to the Weltmeister you really can't feel that much of a difference. Plus, it's much cheaper than the RS unit so I bought the Weltmeister kit and been happy with it the past two years.

I am interested in doing this upgrade. I went to pelican and b&m's site both and they only list a shifter kit for 996 and Boxsters. Are they discontinued? Or will these work for the 993?

The PO installed an FVD short shift kit in my 97. I have no complaints.

I got my 993 with a B&M, feels good, but didn't have the previous to compare. I did put a WEVO in my 930 and it's a world of difference, but don't know if the make them for 993's
