Default Changing out key fob?

Can I get a different key fob from Porsche to replace the original's (rectangular fob's)? Have any of you done this? I would think they make some new ones that have a lot better range than the originals.

I bought a new key and programmed it. The range isn't any better than the original. You almost have to be inside the car for it to work.

I replaced my wife's 'switchblade' key/remote on her Targa with the other design:
http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p93007.htm

Much easier to use, didn't really check the range.
No reprogramming necessary. IIRC, there is a DIY on the pcar website.

Let's make it easier...

Thanks. I will check it out. It is amazing what a POS the original key fob's are in Porsche's.

Oh, you've seen the ones for the Cayenne and Panamera?
It will make you appreciate what you have.

FWIW, I also replaced the keyfob on my 996TT with the 'CGT style'....much nicer fit/feel/finish IMHO.
http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p80001.htm
(BTW, they are available without the CGT logo)

That Carrera GT fob looks like the way to go. If you are going to spend 75 euro on the other fob, going to the 125 euro key fob seems very slick. Thanks.

Not so fast, I'm not sure you can transplant 993 electronics into the CGT/996 style fob.
AFAIK, 993 electronics can go into the first one I posted a link to (i.e. switchblade conversion).

Also, depending on the $<-> Euro, you might find a better price with Jeff at Sunset Imports (Parts at dealer cost + 15% guys):
http://sunset.porschedealer.com/parts/parts_order.php

993-618-959-12 Hand remote housing
944-538-041-00 Lighted Key Cap

The remote housing only you gave the # for is 44.63 and the lighted fob is
13.48 both in stock. Plus 7-10 dollars shipping on this. Then you transfer your metal key from the switchblade to this new lighted fob and you have a key without needing to program it to the car. For a 2nd key, you'll have to get the entire remote for 96.96 plus another uncut metal key for 21.40 but any locksmith can cut it for you but you'll probably have to take the remotes and keys to a dealer for programming.

The 'Design Key'...aka the CGT key:

Design Key 000.044.000.83

103.93 and a week away to order in. You may know already but this is a plastic housing only, no pc board is included for this part number or price. You transfer your pc board over to this new housing. Plus about
7-8 dollars shipping. Thanks, Jeff.
