I'm guessing though that these aren't up to MN winters

Not sure, but read the reviews. I was quite impressed when I ran it yesterday.

I have used them for years to take the chill off a room. You can get them for less then $40 at Wal-mart usually.

I just bought Andreas' kerosene heater a few weeks ago. The thing really warms up the garage in fairly short order. I have one electric oil-filled radiator to prevent my paint from freezing. One electric unit keeps my garage at about 50 degrees.

They do radiate nicely but they can only do so much. IIRC they are about 5000 btu. I found it lifted the temp in my double garage about 5 deg C but i needed a 45,000 btu heater to properly heat it in a northern winter. It was -22C this morning w/o windchill and has been colder than that recently.

These oil-filled heaters are quite safe, especially for garages. We keep three out in our cabin with thermostatic controls that switch them on when the temp gets down to freezing and shuts off when the temp rises to about +44F. Fortunately, our 6-bay garage here at the house is in the basement and stays a cozy +60F even when it gets in the mid 20F.
