Default Power Steering Hose Replacement Question

I discovered this leak on the power steering high pressure hose today. So far, it's just weeping but it's gotta be replaced. I'll also replace the o-rings and banjo bolt at the PS pump.

I've done my searches, but can't seem to find anything on this particular hose - mostly steering rack issues. So, a couple of questions:

1. Since this is the high pressure hose, is it necessary to relieve any pressure first? Or is there only pressure when the pump is running? Just trying to avoid an engine bay sprayed with Pentosin

2. The banjo bolt connection to the PS pump looks somewhat close to the engine bay. I can't really tell how long the bolt is but I'm guessing it can be unthreaded from the pump and then the hose can be removed. Anyone have experience with this?

3. Anything else to consider?

Eric!

Bummer... looks messy.

No pressure when engine is not running but it will dump a lot of fluid.
You can get the banjo bolt off.

Be sure that hose is the culprit.

Thanks Mark, I'm pretty sure it's this hose. I can wipe it dry, start the car, turn the wheel lock-to-lock, and can see it leaking right at the top of the wet spot in that picture.

Assuming I do spill a little, what's works best to clean up PS fluid?

I would stuff a good absorbant rag under the fitting. It will get soaked... I would crack it and let it bleed for a bit, change the rag and go for hose change.
It is just a hydraulic fluid so it is a light oil. Any citrus degreaser or the like will help cleanup.

one last thought... where does the other end of that line end up? I can't recall from memory but isn't it a pretty long hard line at one end?

The pump end is not hard to get to but the other end... not sure off the top of my head.

That hose runs from the pump back to the A/C compressor, hangs a U to up near the oil filler, converts to a hard line and zig zags around the oil filler, PS reservoir and fuel filter back to the firewall right behind the air filter where it connects to the line that runs up front.

I think removing the entire air filter box will allow sufficient access to both ends. I'll probably also remove the fuel filter (needs replacement, anyway) and loosen the PS reservoir to make it a little easier.

If you take the time to replace that line be sure to replace the o-rings also. 999.701.235.50 X 2. Eric is correct about access. It should take an hour or less.
