Here are a couple of images of mine when I replaced it. You can see some of the plumbing.
EDIT: I cheated on this one. I did the SAI Roto-Rooting while the engine was out. If your engine is in - good luck!
Even vise grips won't get it off from the top. It just spins. You have to get the bottom where it's threaded into the SAI valve.

Did you have to remove anything else out of the way to get the vise grips and channel locks to fit and remove the SAI?

On a 1995, you can remove the entire SAI system and the cats too without throwing any codes. BTDT.

No real benefit; you lose a few pounds and that's about it. I chose to remove it due to space constraints.
For anyone who removes their SAI pump, remember to re-install the bolts (you may need shorter bolts, I can't recall) since the bolts that hold the SAI pump also fasten the cover on the oil galley. Things will get very very messy if you forget.

I presume the air 'manifold' can go as well - is it just bolted to the case, or do the bolts need reinstallation?
