Great job John,

Ah, go behind the kick panels to get to the ducts. That's a great idea. Well, hopefully, for those who have completed this repair, we won't have to visit that part of the car for a long while.

Go drive your car and use that A/C when it starts to get a bit warmer. At least you'll know it's going to work.

Now, off to get a new battery...

I just found this great thread after searching for Firewall. (Funny it didn't come up with the other searches that I did.)

I just started a new thread asking if you can service or replace the expansion valve without removing the fuel tank. If so I would like to try that before replaceing the evaporator.

Thanks to all who posted. This is a very useful thread.

993James993,
It is not too bad removing the gas tank. Just make sure it is empty. Once the tank is out the fire wall is right there. Follow the directions from pcar up to that point. You don't have to take the air box, radio, or CCU out to service the expansion valve but the firewall does need to come out. You could try to do this with the tank and firewall in - it might work. The time you spend trying to work around this stuff would be better spent just removing the tank and wall.

I "think" I may have a bad expansion valve. Shortly after my wrench did a complete a/c service late last summer, a strange vibration would rise through the car with the normal a/c cycle. Thoughts on this anyone?

I think the AC swap out was just added to my list. The Kewl.? parts look much better the OE stuff.

So how often does the compressor fail, or is usually a leak in the condenser / valve in the front firewall.

Woo hoo!! Finally got the evaporator replaced. So far so good. Blowing nice cool air in the humid Arkansas summer. Thanks for everyone that answered questions that I had, also +1 to Rennsport Werkstadt in Tulsa, OK for a few tips.

I've got to say this was a very satisfying DIY. I had to replace one of the hard lines in the rocker panel because of a pin-hole leak. Now it is very comfortable to drive around on the warmer days.
