I like IXLR8's idea. But if you want to try a quick/easy test, how about trying some belt dressing spray? Be very careful, no over spray, little bit goes a long way. Try spraying one belt, start, check for squeal. Continue until all three are done. May help to locate problem. If squeal stops, you can concentrate on affected belt. If not, maybe it's not belts.

If the bearing in the fan hub assembly is near the end of its life, it may be causing adequate drag to cause the belts to slip briefly when cold: once the remaining lube is distributed in the bearing, all becomes quiet .....

Pull the belts, and spin the shaft(s) by hand ..... all should be silky smooth, except for the drag of the alternator brushes.

Has anybody suggested pulling the cooling fan belt sensor back so that it isn't being spun by the belt.

Do so very carefully or better yet, tie it back if possible.

I don't know, but your warning light will come on. Erase the code if that is the case.

no, no code, at the contrary. I wouldn't do it with engine running, you will loose a finger or two.
I cannot watch the movie on the pc I am at, but would like to suggest an easy one.

open the engine lid when car cold.
get a small bottle of water
turn engine on, and stand in front of engine
when it squeals, pour water on the crank pulley
if it stops squealing, pour more water and finish the bottle
voila

removed AC belt..... squeal.

removed Alt belt.... no squeal.

alt shaft, spin by hand feels fine, no play. bearing looks nice and new.

alt pulley had 4 shims. I took one out and put it back together (no ac)

so far no squeal.

ill try to start it again in a few days and see if it squeals again.

Hi forum,

UK - VW Golf 1.9 TDI 2004 MK5 - 102K miles.

I'm experiencing a couple of seconds squeal from cold start.

Car is fully serviced and cam belt, water pump and pulleys changed 6 months ago.

Noise goes away after a few seconds and has only started over the last 2 weeks, can anyone help me diagnose the problem??

I've shot a short video of the problem and posted on YouTube: -

Thanks in advance.. Richard

Hi guys, I had ths very issue in the early days of 993 ownership. Turned out to be other than needing new belts, a pulley upgrade to Turbo (just in case): THE BELTS WERE ON TOO TIGHT!!!!!!! I figured 'since I'm in there' replaced the bearings. All is well, not a squeek 5 years later. It took 3 months to locate, what an incredible annoyance.
