Default Wheel Re-Paint Failure

I re-painted my wheels (Curb rash from PO) at the end of the summer...Used the method and materials recommended on this site and was pretty pleased with the result.

Today, while washing the car, I noticed a "yellowing" of the paint in the areas where I had used filler. At first, I thought it was clean motor oil on the wheel, but closer examination revealed that it was the size and shape of the filled areas and was, indeed, under the clearcoat.

Interestingly, it is only on the two rear wheels...Those were the ones I re-painted first.

Clearly, I'm going to have to re-paint the re-paint and I want to get it right this time.

Any ideas as to why it happened and how I can avoid it?

Again, I did everything exactly as described here.

Thanks in advance...

Terry

It sounds to me like you did not apply enough primer/sealer to the areas with the bondo(filler). Paint should not be applied directly to the filler, it must be primed first. You also should make sure that there was adequate drying time before applying color and clear.

Good luck with the do over!

Have no fear - you are the only one that sees the yellowing. Only if you point it out or you have a fellow r'lister study the finish, no one will ever notice.

I had a little bit of this 'yellowing" too, and like you, only on one wheel. I will have to repaint it before I mount the new shoes next week.

Just thought you'd feel better...

Maybe too much heat from the brakes for the type of clearcoat used? Just a thought.

+1

If it's really nagging you, wait till you need new tires and have the wheels off the car again and without tires on them. It's really not worth getting too worked up about.

I did use primer...Two coats over two days...I did the wheels in pairs...Rears (The one yellowing) first and the fronts second...Must have been some difference in "atmospheric" conditions that caused the problem...

Ah, well...Something to do this winter when the car is parked for a while.

Thanks for the info...

Terry
