Default 993 turbo lifespan/replacement

under normal circumstances, how long should the turbo's on a 993 last, figuring no track use. i have heard horror stories on the turbos letting go anywhere between 5000 & 55000 miles, requiring replacement. any validity here?

The turbo on my '82 MB 300TD was blowing fine when I sold it at 254K miles. I would expect no less from a Porsche.
