+1

I called Sunset Porsche to check in the parts cost.

Calipers: US$ 301.71 each
Rotors: Around US$ 161.70

I see a few of the sales threads on these used items and can't figured out why people would pay more for used when they can get them new for less..

I just check the Performance Products catalog.

993tt Big Red Kit for a 993 C2/4 is
Front $1995.00
Rear $1795.00

Kit includes calipers, rotors, brackets, adapters, hardware.

And FVD has the Big Red calipers for $445 each.

Guess the used price being so close to new is just a testament to the quality of the part. (Just guessin)

My point exactly... you can buy the calipers, rotors, pads, etc. from Sunset and have a big brake setup for around 1K vs those kits for 2K...

Using your Sunset quoted prices, that's still $1848 for the 4 caipers and 4 rotors.

How you figure 1k for the setup?

Front only, front only... that was the quote from Performance you posted...

For the front setup US$1362.82 to be exact (calipers, rotors, pads, adapters). Still some 600.00 less...

Just as an FYI, there are no "brackets, adapters, or hardware" needed to fit big reds on a 993. You just need the two S/Turbo caliper mounting bolts for the fronts. Rears are unchanged.

Good to know, I did the pricing for my 964, thus the reason for the adapters...

so that means that for a 993 owner the cost for switching the front is US$1,126.00

This is very informative. You can easily make do with a front Big Red conversion and then paint the rear small blacks to match. I am definitely going to look into this. It's not fair that my Beetle gets to wear Big Reds and not my 993.

That's what the catalog states.

"Mounting bolts" qualify as "hardware"?

Can you really get by with just the fronts? I thought there would be an imbalance...portioning is the word I'm looking for, right?

Hmmm... This is very tempting.

VCI recommends a "balanced" package.

Good point. Can someone answer this question?

I believe you can do this based on my calcs. I calculate that 4 big reds shift the bias forward by several %, while big reds on just the fronts shifts the bias forward just a percent or two. Big Red fronts and RS rears shifts the bias back a few %. I'm not a brake expert, so I'd feel better if somebody could confirm the analysis.

p.s. Brake Torque = Effective Radius * Piston Area

If you are just replacing your front brakes, why not move the front black set-up to the rear.

IMHO painting your little blacks red is for posers. If you want to repaint them go for something cool, like bright blue, orange, or a violent purple.

I have big reds on the front and stock rears at the moment (waiting for RS rears to arrive)

I have found the balance to be good not great. My car is predominatly for the track and with this setup could use a little more rear bias. This could be adjusted with pads to a certain degree as well. I run pagid blacks front and rear.

There are a few problems with mounting the fronts on the rear.

1: Adapter would be needed as the fronts are mounted radially
2: Rear rotors are narrower by some 4mm than the fronts, not alot when the pads are new but could pose a piston problem when the pads wear out (ie. pistons coming too far out of housing.)

Regards
