Clutch pedal hanging up

My cluth pedal does not return all the way when released. Feels loke a mechanical, not hydraulic problem. Any fixes?

Robin 993DX 09-09-2008 12:41 PM

There are various causes you can start here: http://p-car.com/diy/pedal/

The standard procedure seems to be:

1. bleed the clutch
2. replace the clutch slave cylinder
3. replace the kinematic lever

Those are in order of difficulty, so people seem to just go down the list until they fix it. I ended up doing all three. :(

it's common for pedal cluster bushing to go bad too. If it's those you should just plan on doing all the pedal bushings while your there.

I had this happen on track. Its the bushing. Only happened when very hot and it would stick. Would go away when cooled down. We will change it out to a brass unit when we pull the motor this winter to rebuild.

FWIW

I had this issue and it was the slave cylinder. Fixed when I replaced it. Felt mechanical but wasn't.

 I have this problem now and then and just pull the pedal up with my foot as needed (esp. when using cruise control). :)

Same here. Once I lubricated kinematic lever and all other jounts. Problem disappeared for a while, but came back.

True, I could have put that as Step 1, but it doesn't seem to be successful long-term. It worked for me for about 30 miles.

Based on what you described mine sticks @1inch from full return. Porsche mechanic drove it and after pumping up pedal it engages correctly. He suggest replacing the clutch master cylinder. Car has 100K miles on it. I can also manually use my left foot to "pull" clutch pedal back. It will softly "click" into place using that method but, will go back to same "stuck" area.

Replacing the clutch master cylinder is NOT the typical solution to this very common problem. And since you have a 1995, you have the old kinematic arm before its redesigns. Sorry, but your mechanic is very likely wrong on this. He may know better (he should!) and is perhaps just inflating the bill.

This is an issue that I am going to have to deal with soon, mine sticks about 1/4 of the time !

Easiest way to bill more.....Doesn't solve the essence of the problem -- kinematic lever.

Eric and others,
Appreciate your input. Car is scheduled for some other general maint at well known air cooled Porsche specialist (Akers in Seattle). They are familiar with this known issue and will be happy to give it a look. Thanks for saving me some $$ and frustration. I will follow up w/you guys after cars appointment next week.
Cheers.
