What shop would you recommend to replace a windshield (cabriolet) in the Houston area? I am looking rather for quality than low price. Would you go with OEM or after market glass?
Thanks,
Erik

I'm not an expert by any means, but I've heard that the OEM glass is soft and prone to pitting etc. and therefore not a good choice. You would be wise to go with someone who is a Porsche windshield installation expert, and not some "1-800-Glass" type shop, as if this glass is not installed expertly, you will have squeaks and rattles, and maybe worse. This is an area where hiring a specialist to do the job is paramount.

I would probably check the body shops like Casari's and Independent which work on Porsches. I prefer Independent and just had some paint work done there along with the door strap fix. I agree on the soft German glass but don't know if you'll have options. Independent is on Clay and Casari's is on Windfern. Ken

I recently had a new windshield installed in my 993. I tried to get an American PPG glass, but sadly it was not available. The local shop who did mine (who is also a PPG authorized installer) ended up using an OEM German Sigla. It does fit nicely and it is great not having to peer through 12 years worth of sandblasting.
I'd recommend that you buy an OEM windshield seal so that the glass shop does not use a cheap aftermarket one. I got mine from Sunset Porsche in Oregon.

My understanding is there really is only one source, Germany....
I have used Safelite in the past. They come to you, and it may be simpler if you provide the new seal from the dealer.

I went to Porsche of North Houston and they did both of my 993s within the last 2 years. When they did my cabrio, I was not happy with the alignment (uneven gaps). They re-did the job without any questions asked. When I brought my 4S 3 months ago, they did it right with the first attempt ...
They bring in a "glass guy" to do the job. If you would get him directly you might be able to safe some money.
To prevent the squirking, you need to ask for the extra rope to be put into the gap between windshield and body (some 996 number). I paid about 1400 USD total (via insurance) after using the 20% discount from PCA.
