Default Need new wheel help

My Anteras are 'untrue' due to the heavy infestation of potholes in NYC. Have been looking for reasonably priced replacement. Now I had thought that forged wheels were much, much stronger than cast. But expensive. I like the BBS-style Sport Classic wheels, but the 997 comes with some nice stuff also.

I saw a set of wheels, 997-style and sent a question about strength to the seller. He replied, and I like his reply since he didn't give me the old sales pitch, and it goes like this:

"Our wheels are made from counter pressure casting method to ensure superior strength and to be cost effective. Antera was made from Gravity Casting method. The major different between Gravity Cast, Counter Pressure Cast and Forged wheels is only the weight factor. The reason I?m saying that is because when a cast wheel was built it requires more aluminum in order to achieve the testing requirement due to the lower density. The forged wheel requires less aluminum to achieve the same testing requirement due to the higher density. So which is the reason why Forged wheel is always lighter than a cast wheel. Even though the strength is higher on the forged but due to the removal of the material, the strength is now much closer. Out of round was typically due to heavy impact from potholes. I can assure you that all wheels regardless of how it was constructed will run into the same problem. One major cause for out of round is tire pressure. Tire pressure fluctuates considerably as temperature changes. When you have a low profile tire the fluctuation magnifies. On the low profile tire you actually have a very small cushioning between the road and the pothole so as you can imagine if low pressure / low profile tire meets a pothole...here comes the out of round. I hope I?ve been able to explain the true cause of out of round wheel."

Does anyone have a counter opinion. I have a bit more info on my website:

http://www.porscheplayground.com

with a picture of my car with the wheels superimposed on the image.

Cost is a factor, but there are cheaper wheels on eBay such as Turbo Twist, etc. Italian copies but I'm wary of them.

I respect your opinions greatly.

thanks,

Billy

Of course wheels are very subjective; however, for me, I have never liked the 997tt design wheels and I can't imagine I would like them on a 993. Also, if you are worried about wheels bending and if you agree with the low profile=less cushion=greater chance to bend then you should shy away from 19 inch wheels. I personally like the looks of the one's in your avatar better.

Enjoy the search

If you wait around you will find a set of OEM wheels for a fair price here.

flatsixforme: The 997 style wheels are 18" inches because I didn't want to go with the lower profile tires. I would use 225/40's and 265/35's both 18"s. I like the Anteras too, but not if they are going have a problem with NYC.

Allill: Looking here and ebay and other places. The 907 wheels were a good price. Not cheap, but fair.
Will keep any of your thoughts in mind. Love your Cab. And Fatlace.

My apologies, I thought the 997tt wheels were all 19's. What do you think about MY02's...always a favorite of mine.

Adam, nice but not my favorites. Also, Turbo Twists are on the bottom of my list (although wouldn't mind hollow spokes).

Love your car, pal.

billy

p.s. The ones I was looking at were 997TT wheels, but reps. Might be a little overpowering for the car. Oh, and I have an M030 suspension, which is probably part of my problem but I love lowered. Of cours, like Allill, I scrape the floor often. Why I might raise it an inch or so.
