I have P-Zero Rosso N3's and like them. The car had Riken Raven's on Cup Rims (lighter than my Targa rim setup) that felt pretty good for the two days I had them on the car. Had Bridgestone RE0950's on my 964 which handled nicely. The Pirellis were/are pretty quiet as were the Bidgestones. Can't say anything about tire/road noise about the Rikens because the 993 is pretty loud with the factory Sound Package (at least I think it's stock and not RSR mufflers). Not a big fan of the Sumitomo HTRZ-II (tramlining) or Kuhmo Ecatza (blow out driving the 964 back from Houston in rear, which is how I ended up on the Bridgestones). Just my $0.02.

Default Tires

After taking my 1987 911 to a track day my Goodyear F1's have lost there traction due I expect to being through too many heat cycles from my track day. I have Michelin PS2's on my 993 and like them very much in the wet as well as dry circumstances but haven't used them for a track day. Having another set of them for my '87 I will be replacing the Goodyears with them.

Regards,
Patrick

Very pleased with PS2s for street work. Love the MPSC for track work, but didn't really like them on the street.

Bridgestone RE050A Pole Positions: great all around tire, fantastic in the rain, maybe not as sharp on turn-in as I'd like, great wearing from what I can tell. Bridgestone RE01R: fantastic dry grip, sharper response, couldn't comment on wet weather or wear.

Third complete set of Kumho MXs, which means 6 sets of rears. Completely satisfied! Excellent grip, good feedback at the limit w/o surprises, and stay relatively quiet even when near worn out. Not to metnion decent wear overall. Superb bang-for-buck tire, and one of the best performance/dollar, IMHO.

You can easily pay Michelin or Pirelli prices and get higher performance, but you'd pay 2x-3x more money for maybe another few percent better grip. That may be worth it for the track, but not for the street, IMHO (which brings to mind that I did run the MXs long ago on a trackday in summer ...they did great!).

I was going to try the Sumi IIIs as they seem to be getting lots of love from 993 guys, but gotta wait until these MX wear out. Did I mention these are great tires?

I run 225 and 255 17s. I consistently got 16-18K miles on each set of rears. The fronts, of course, lasted twice as long. My 95 is a daily driver, driven spiritedly (hardly sees any stop n go), but does get a bit of fwy mileage. Still, I give them no quarter on every turn. Great tires, IMHO and my experience. Hope this helps you.

My reviews are based on PNW climate which tends to be colder and wet. Others in warmer/dryer climate may have a different experience.

Pirelli P-Zero: Grippy in the dry but as soon as it rains, you may as well be on ice skates, especially as they wear out. Inspire total fear.

ContiSport2: Same as P-Zeros. That said, I also read the review for the new gen ContiSport3 which alludes to a much better tire in line with PS2s...interesting.

S02: Very noisy as they wear and they let loose easily. Not confidence inspiring.

PS2: By far the most balanced street tire I've ever driven on and my favorite. Very communicative, heats up quickly, low noise, very grippy and light. They are consistent in their characteristics right to the very end of their life. High cost and quick wear are enough incentive to look for alternatives.

Falken 615: What I replaced my PS2s with. Heats up faster and is grippier than PS2s. You can't tell from the tread pattern just how well these tires handle in the rain. Two weeks after I bought them, I did a road trip and drove for three hours on heavy rain, at times reaching 90MPH with complete confidence. They communicate extremely well and have stiffer sidewalls but that also means they're heavier. They come with 6/32nds new so they don't last very long either but they are bar-none the best AutoX tire IMO.

Khumo MX: Never owned them but did extensive research on them when I was looking to replace my PS2s. Chose Falkens over Khumos because Khumos got poor reviews in the wet, otherwise they seem to be a decent tire so I'm not surprised by Edward's review but, Jarred, Edward is in SoCal and you're in WA so I would keep looking if I were you. Edward, you may want to check out 615s next time.

SumiIII: Very, very curious based on the reviews here. Haven't bought them but just might.

Falken 452: This is one step down from the 615 (200 tread wear, while 452 is 300). Excellent in the rain and all around a great 300 tread wear tire. Sounds exactly like the SumiIII reviews but doesn't look as nice IMO. I will be buying another set of tires for my Audi soon and was going to buy 452s but may have to give the Sumis a try. Gotta say, Sumis look great for a cheap tire.

AAAAAHHHHH!!!!! Too many choices!

Thanks, Louis for that great summary! I think I will stay away from the PS2s for the short life of the tire, although I think they're great. I have them on my New Beetle Convertible (don't laugh--look at my sig--it's faster than my P-car). I'm leaning toward the Conti's or the Sumi's.

^Agree. Thanks for the summary Louis. One thing I'm waffling on is my wheels. The 18x10.5/18x9.5 setup on my car leaves me with very few choices for tires. The PO put Toyo T1-R 245/35-18 on the front and 285/30-18 on the rear. If you search Tire Rack for that combination, you get:
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 $1100/set + ship
Yokohama ADVAN Sport $1200/set + ship
BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2 $1100/set + ship
+ some race tires

For some reason they don't show the Proxes, but it looks like can get another set of them for $800-900. They don't appear to be lasting a long time though. I'll be surprised if I get 10,000 miles on them. So, I can keep running my current wheels and put Proxes or one of the other tires listed above on. Or I can try running a set of MY02 or something similar with Kumhos (I don't drive this thing in the rain that much Louis I live on the other side of the mountains.) or one of the many other options.

I'm so confused!

Well, today I picked up a Porsche approved tire brochure at the local dealership, and it lists the tire recommendation for the 959, but not the 993....Hmmm....

Default Yokohama Advan Neova's for me

bought those on the advice of a well respected RL'er who owned one of the more capable 993 (TT actually) cars around these here parts. Excellent tire for me, but I pretty much only drive on dry roads. Good ride characteristics for a daily driver and IMHO pretty good feedback when taken to near the limit.
