Hi everyone,

I've seen prior threads on MPG on 993's. I agree that the car is too fun to really care. Plus, I get 20 combined on my C4S and I'm ok with that.

However, I'm looking for a new project for my car. I thought it would be fun to consider modifications to improve MPG without sacrificing performance much. What do you think would improve MPG most?
> Less weight, to include performance seats, no a/c, stripping the whole thing out? What would have the biggest impact?

> Reprogram the ECU? Other engine mods?

> Adding more air to the tires? (ok...I'm getting ridiculous)

Anything else? I think it would be cool to jump my combined MPG from 20 to 25. Thanks!

Kebal, Use the time spent on thinking about this to work a part time job to pay for more fuel so you can drive it like it was meant to be driven. 20 plus mpg is as good as it gets. You are already getting more mpg than most of the rest of us. Enjoy the car. All that aside, I love those little projects, keeps life interesting.....

Saving weight is going to have VERY little impact on MPG unless you drive ALL stop and go... and even then not much. Tire pressure is always a tradeoff between ride, handling, and rolling resistance. Jumping to 25? Good luck.

I think driving a 993 for MPGs is going to do more harm than good in the long run.

lighter wheels might help. though not exactly saving money buying expensive wheels. all this saving on MPG just seems so silly when people spend so much on other things that are easier to change.

though you could drive fast and draft behind everyone haha.

This is what works for me and allows me to get 31 City & 49 Highway:

Disconnect the secondary rotor - With only half of the plugs firing, fuel consumption automatically goes down.

Tape over all exterior body seams with Gorilla Tape - The reduced cd directly translates to more miles per gallon.

Keep the tires between 80 & 85 psi - The decreased rolling resistance is one of the easiest ways to squeeze a few more miles out of each gallon.

Keep your engine tray on - Reduced turbulence under the engine compartment allows the car to move through the air smoother.

Empty a full bladder into your tank for every two days of driving - The salinity of urine serves to rid the pistons of harmful carbon deposits.

As usual, your results may vary. There is no need to follow this protocol point for point - you can start slow and implement one or more of the easier suggestions first. Let me know if I can offer any further assistance.

I am a pretty agressive driver, putting about 25K miles a year on my car with about 2/3s of that on the freeway. Recently I spun my car so, partly to protect the tires til it gets an alignment and partly to a reality check I have been cruising on the freeway at the speed limit and have had very, very few full throttle bursts.

I went from just under 20 mpg to about 21 or so. Not such a great help.

I wonder if AC packs an MPG whallop. What you northerners say?
