OK, we've already done a very thorough job of discussing the various merits of each brand. Now is where the used oil spills all over the garage floor: what are you actually going to re-fill with next time? Again, not looking for more debate, just the facts. In fact, hopefully this will serve as some quasi-scientific conclusion to the debates!

For Swepco, I meant 15/40, not 15/45.

For Mobil 1, I meant 15/50 or any other weight of Mobil 1.

"Other" is intended for other brands not listed. Just pick the closest weight for your brand.

I just went through this.

Started out with Castrol MTX. It was PoS oil and my engine would burn 1qt 2K miles.

Switched to Mobil 1 V-twin for the additives. No more burn, 1qt last 5k miles. But it was expensive.

Just switched to Brad Penn. 1K and things are looking good as the Mobil 1. But BP is 1/3 the price of Mobil 1.

I vary oil weight based on ambient temp according to the owner's manual. 10W40 for winter here in Texas. Summer is 20W50 or 15W50.

I'm way down South so: Swepco 306 20W50 for the 993 (NEVER heard of the 15w45 !! or did you mean to list it as a "garage blend" also??), Brad Penn 20W50 for the 944S, but I can't vote more than once.

As long as Wal-mart still has the old formulation Mobil1 Truck & SUV Diesel Delvac whatever 5W40 for so cheap, I'll stick with it.

FYI there's 2 flavors of Mobil 1 15w50 in the USA now: silver cap "new high performance" and gold cap "extended protection", though I'm under the impression that EP is going out of production if it hasn't already. I'm using the silver cap in 5 qt jugs from walmart mixed with my old stock of gold cap.

Oh, and I'm going to start sending the oil to Blackstone for analysis.

I bought the BP, enough for 2 changes and blended to get 15/40. Burning very little oil and reaches operating temperature faster than Mobile; however, with this I have noticed it runs a tad hotter when run hard. I'll put in my second batch next change but after that I might try Swepco. I would use redline if it was not so darn expensive.

+1.

My 993 came with comprehensive records from the PO (original owner) which showed M1 15/50 at each oil change.

I've followed suite and see no reason to change.

I may go this route as well since it is reasonably priced from AZ Autohaus. Otherwise, I may drain the current Mobil 1 0w-40 and refill with Mobil 1 15w-50 and be happy. Life is too short to worry about oil choices.
