Default 993s heading back to Germany...

Spoke to A Dealer today who told me he would guess that 500 993s have been purchased stateside this year and shipped back to Germany by German collectors and dealers. He said, especially NB, coupe cars with less than 50K miles are in high demand over there. With the dollar so weak they are scooping up everything. Anyone know if there is any truth to this? Sounds plausible given how weak our dollar is. A shame that our 993 pool is being rapidly depleted though!

That's what I was wondering as I always thought wide bodies and turbos were in higher demand but he said that the Germans are going for the NBs...

Here in the UK, we have definitely seen quite a few lhd 964 RS & 993 RS/GT2 head back to Europe as the currency has strengthened, these are the cars that mostly came to the UK in the late '90's early '00s when the Euro and the prospect of such, hammered the existing european currencies.

An example, I have an invoice where a 964RS was part exchanged against a 993.....In Sept 2000 £19k was allowed for the 964RS which at the time the GBP/USD rate was 1.4050 = $26,700.

Recently in 2008 I have seen similar cars bought at that time sell for £50k+ which at todays GBp/usd rate of 1.995 = $99.75k.

It is no suprise cars are heading back to Europe!
I am resisting the temptation to advertise my own lhd 993, because if I sold it, I would be unlikely to find a replacement at sensible money in the current environment.

The Deutchers are very conservative and pragmatic with their cars. No frills - stay away from stuff (bling) that does not add value to performance: leather interior, performance-robbing turbo-look, power this-and-that and the like. BTW: they really like turbo diesels in their sedans and tend to stay away from turbo gassers. Why - the turbo-D's are literally bathed in the oil they burn which increases life span tangibly. This I heard from several Deutchers during numerous trips over there.

NB coupes are a great bargain, when you get over $50k you open a door to a wide range of performace cars, gotta really want a wide body to pay over 50k, 996tt are trading for less at auctions. NB 993, hands down best sports car under 40k. I also believe that the 997 has drummed up a revived interest in the 993, classic 911 feel, modern looks and modern goodies, suspension, ect...
not to mension a new 911 is going the cost over 100k US in Germany, makes 993 the bargain of the century at under 40k US.

500 didn't seem like a lot percentage wise of the 24,000 that were produced and sold in the US. Just under 7%.

But then 500 of the cars for sale...that seems like a big percentage. Of course, how many are for sale at any given time? Maybe 1000-1500 over the course of 6 months. All of a sudden 500 is a bunch. Just a thought...

Alone 3 friends of mine from Germany and Switzerland bought 4 Porsche's within the last 12 month where off 3 were 993 CAB and C2S. The other one was a Cayenne S.

IMO, if they were being snapped up by a certain country, I'd just as well that it be Germany.

Possibly...in Hong Kong a large percentage of the 993 turbos and even NA's have been purchased and shipped to Australia and Europe over the past 5-6 years given the weakness in the US$. 15 year old NB 993s now go for $40-45k (vs 65-75k 10 years ago so price has held up pretty well); while 10-12 year old 993 Turbos are $100-120k vs $75-60k 6 years ago - although the ridiculously steep prices for new Porsches has also helped support prices (stopped by the dealer last week to look at a Cayman S...asking $130k ).
