Default Front Protection BAR for 993

Hi,

I have swapped my original front spoiler with a RS one and am considering to buy a Front protection bar to protect the spoiler.
The add for the FPB indicates to be a solution for cars that are lowered. I wonder if this FPB solution would be interesting for my 993 wich is not lowered, but just to protect the front RS spoiler.
Also, does anyone has this option installed and any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Daniel

I had one until a few weeks ago. I removed it as I was constantly scraping stuff with it. Since removing it I havent scraped anything. The bar basically lowers your front ride height by about 29mm.

I am at RS ride height.

29mm?? I have the one from Gert and don't think it lowers it that much...even if it does, I'd rather scrape that often than the bumper seldom, but that's me. I don't have a lip spoiler or anything, so that could make a difference.

I had the one from Gert too. I measured it with a combination square when I yanked it off. Measured 1-1/8" or approx. 29mm

I'm operating on the same principle as my friend & fellow Vermonter, Fred. My car is at RS height, and I almost never scrape. If I added a FPB, I'm sure I would scrape all the time. And eventually, one of those scrapes might be of sufficient impact to damage the car. If you think about it, the FPB reduces the distance between your car and the ground. So no FPB for me.

I was concerned about the potential for scraping on my rather steep driveway when I lowered my car earlier this year, but I've had no issues there or at the speed bumps in my neighborhood.

I didn't like the fact that you could see the FPB from the front, either, so I opted not to install one.

The problem with the FPB is that it mounts to the floor pan of the front storage compartment and to the splitters on the ends of the bar. Wile a scrape is uinlikely to do any damage to the floorpan it will force the FPB to rip out of its mounts on the splitter. My garage at my office has a somewhat steep incline and with the FPB I'd have to take it slowly at an angle now I can take it more quickly at an angle or slowly straight ahead. I'm happy to sacrifice a scrape to the floorpan and destroy the splitter instead of having the FPB there and most certainly putting the kaibosh on the integrity of the floorpan.

Hm, I bought one of these guys and haven't installed it yet. Now you all have me rethinking that...

I have both the RS spliters and the Gert FPB. No issues so far. It has saved a scrape to the RS pieces a couple of times I think. BTW if you don't install the FPB, there is a RS center spoiler lip that goes where the FPB fits, so if you intall the RS center spoiler, your ground clearance is lowered anyway.

+1 I bought one and when I saw how it was attached I had second thoughts and never installed it. It just looks way too easy to see it catching on something and doing real damage at the mounting points.

FPB has saved me a few nasty scrapes. I haven't had any problems with scraping too much. My ride height is between SUV and ROW.

The FPB extends ~1", but that is also the amount that a true RS chin center section extends. The FPB replaces the plasteic part w/ a robust part.

I scrape all the time, better to scrape the FPB than the fragile aero parts

Here you can see the FPB and the right hand side chin

here are the 3 pieces of the chin

I took mine off, too, for the same reasons as listed above. I do agree with Bill's point, however. If you have the RS center section, you might just as well replace it with a FPB.

Why doesn't someone make a FPB made of flat stock, say 1/4" or 3/8" thick? That would offer similar protection with less reduction in ground clearance.

I purchased one from an Ebay seller and found it was made well and is 100% stainless steel. I believe I paid less than $70.00 and still see them from time to time.
